What color do you like best? Do you like yellow, orange and red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, or an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grey and blue? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are likely to be strong-minded and determined. You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what psychologists (心理學(xué)家)tell us. They have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, and the effects that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don’t choose our favorite color as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you do so as soon as you open your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
Black is depressing while light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more comfortable than a dark green one does, and a red dress adds warmth and cheer to sad winter days. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark grey.
Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a few colorful things. Also remember that you will know your friends (and your enemies) better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don’t forget that anyone can guess a lot about you when you choose a piece of handkerchief.

When I was in middle school, I was one of the smaller players on the basketball team. In our first game of the season, we were   31  to face a good team, all of whom were tall guys. Naturally, at my   32 , it would have been easy to be   33  by our competitors.
On game day, my basketball coach called me over to him. He was a strong and tough coach, and in his   34  rough manner said, “Joel, you’re not that   35 , but let me tell you that size doesn’t matter. Don’t be afraid. What   36  is right down in here.” He pointed his finger at his  37  as he continued, “Joel, you’ve got a big heart, and you’re to   38  it this year.”
When I heard the coach’s   39  , I stood taller than usual! I thought to myself: The coach believes in me! My confidence   40  and I played better that year than I’d ever done before.
It’s   41  what we can achieve when we know somebody really believes in us. That coach took a little time to make a big   42   . He took time to make me confident in myself. If we’re going to   43  the best in people, we need to sow seeds of   44  .
As the saying goes, “Love looks for a way of being constructive.”   45  , love looks for ways to help improve somebody else’s life.
When people are   46  us, they should leave better off than they were before. People should feel   47  and inspired after spending any time with you and me  48  feeling discouraged or defeated.
Remember, there’s   49  greater investment(投資)in life than in being a people builder. Relationships   50  much more to us than our achievements.

I spent two months with an American family last year when I studied in America.
It is said, “The best house is in America, the best wife is in Japan, and the best food is in China.” So I took pride (自豪)and __21__ to __22__ “the best food” for my American family. Each day, regardless of my poor skill of cooking, I would do something in __23__ way: changing the dishes’ colour, the meat’s type or the soup’s style. (風(fēng)味)Thus, my American friends could discover the __24__ of eating Chinese food. Because of my “__25__” job, I was often rewarded (獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)) by their __26__ of appreciation (感激)such as “very delicious”, “excellent”, etc.
But the joke was here: Yesterday, I cooked Sichuan style __27__ for dinner. I was __28__ at my achievement.(成就)
When all the family members arrived at the table, they first looked __29__ at the fish, then looked at me. “Why do all the fish have their __30__?” they asked, “It’s terrible!”
Terrible or beautiful? I don’t know. But I __31_ know that fish heads are delicious. The __32__ is the best part of fish; in __33__ only the respectable (受敬重的)guest can have the special honour of __34__ it.
Another __35__ thing is: The American friends often said to me “__36__” as they __37__ fruits or other things. According to Chinese tradition I would simply smile in answer to their kindness __38__ actually helping myself to any of the food. __39__, I said “help yourself” to them whenever I brought home fruits. Dear me, no matter how much or how often I brought home food, as long as it was nice to their taste, they __40__ hesitated (猶豫)to use their hands to “help themselves” until all was finished

The next day I sat down, with almost a hundred other candidates, for the intelligence test.I must have done all right because after about half an hour’s wait I was sent into another room for a psychological test. This time there were only about fifty candidates. The interviewer sat at a desk.Candidates were signaled forward to occupy the seat opposite him when the previous occupant had been dismissed, after a greater or shorter time.Obviously the long interviews were the more successful ones. Some of the interviews were as short as five minutes.Mine was the only one that lasted a minute and a half.
I can remember the questions now:“Why did you leave your last job?”“Why did you leave your job before that?”“And the one before that?”I can’t recall my answers, except that they were short at first and grew progressively shorter. His closing statement,I thought, evealed(揭示)a lack of sensitivity which helped to explain why as a psychologist,he had risen no higher than the underground railway.“You’ve failed the psychological test and we are unable to offer you a position.”
Failing to get that job was my low point.Or so I thought, believing that the work was easy.Actually, such jobs—being a postman is another one I still desire—demand exactly the sort of elementary yet responsible awareness that the habitual dreamer is least qualified to give. But I was still far short of full self-understanding.I was also short of cash.
小題1:The writer applied for the job chiefly because        .
A.he wanted to work in the centre of London
B.he could no longer afford to live without one
C.he was not interested in any other available job

A.he often traveled underground
B.he had written many poems
C.he could deal with difficult situations
D.he had worked in a company
小題3:The length of his interview meant that        .
A.he was not going to be offered the job
B.he had not done well in the intelligence test
C.he did not like the interviewer at all
D.he had little work experience to talk about
小題4:What does the writer realize now that he did not realize then?
A.How unpleasant ordinary jobs can be
B.How difficult it is to be a poet
C.How unsuitable he was for the job
D.How badly he did in the interview
小題5:What’s the writer’s opinion of the psychologist?
A.He was very aggressive

When you want to go shopping, decide how much money you can spend on new clothes. Think about the kind of clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes you really need. Then look for those clothes on sale.
There are labels(標(biāo)簽) inside all new clothes. The labels tell you how to take care of your clothes. The label for a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash in cold water. The label on a coat may say “dry clean only”, for washing may ruin this coat. If you do as the directions (說(shuō)明)on the label, you can keep your clothes looking their best for a long time.
Many clothes today must be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check to see if they will need to be dry cleaned. You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed.
You can save money if you buy clothes that are well made. Well-made clothes last longer. They look good even after they have been washed many times. Love, success, happiness, family and freedom----how important are these values to you? Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life.
Question: Could you introduce yourself first?
Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right now I’m a web designer.
Q: What are your great memories?
A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories.

A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent.
Q: What changes would you like to make in your life?
A: If I could change something in my life, I’d change it so that my childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we have a beautiful house? It doesn’t matter as long as I can live with my family and we are safe.
Q: How do your get along with your parents?
A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I’ve got. That’s our way. But I am working in another city. People with healthy self-esteem are able to do better in school and find it easier to make friends. They tend to have better relationships with others, feel happier, find it easier to deal with mistakes and failures, and are more likely to stick to something until they secceed, People with low self-esteem may feel as if no one will like them or accept them or that they can’t do well in anything.
The folowing ways may help you improve your self-esteem.
Try to stop thinking negative thoughts about yourself. If you’re used to focusing on your shortcomings, start thinking about positive aspects of youself that outweigh them.
