_____. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10
out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many
ways: education, medicine, and business. Quietly, the growing of America has made it a very different society,
one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages.
A person's age no longer tells you anything about his or her social position, marriage or health. There's no
longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The
social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn't as strong
as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother,
or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.
Many people say, "I am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age." No one says, "Act
your age" any more. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.

Comic(喜劇的)book superhero Spider-Man uses tiny hairs on his fingertips to climb up walls. But he could have had another secret weapon to help him stick.

Scientists have now found that some spiders can also make silk in their feet, which may sometimes help them get a firmer grip on a surface.

Spiders are good at gripping walls with their legs.Thousands of little hairs on their feet make it possible. To test whether spiders also make these hairs wet to improve grip, scientists watched zebra tarantulas crawl(爬行)up glass slides.

When they tilted a glass slide until it was almost vertical, the spider slipped a few millimeters before attaching itself again. The scientists were surprised to see little threads(線)stretching from its feet to the slide. When they studied the spider’s feet under a special microscope, they found tiny silk-shooting spouts(吐出)among the hairs.

This was a surprise because scientists had previously thought spiders only use special organs near their stomachs to make silk.

It’s possible that, a long time ago, feet were the first body parts of spiders to produce silk.Only later in their evolutionary(進(jìn)化)history did spiders develop spinnerets on their abdomens(腹部)to produce silk for webs(網(wǎng)).

If so, the researchers say, this could mean that the silk’s original purpose was to , rather than to build homes or trap prey(獵物).

A long car journey can be a nightmare(噩夢) for everyone, whether they are adults or children, passengers or drivers. The driver at least has something that he or she needs to concentrate on but for the other occupants of the car, the journey can be boring, uncomfortable, and can make you feel sick. Moreover, passengers who suffer during car journeys can cause stress and anxiety to the driver, who may therefore lose concentration and cause an accident.

With this problem in mind, doctors and child psychiatrists have recommended a series of things to do and not do to make these journeys less stressful.

◆Surveys suggest that a major cause of arguments on car journeys is _________, and evidence shows that drivers operate better if they are listening to something of their own choice. This means that, especially when different generations are traveling, everyone except the driver who wants to listen to music should be equipped with their own source of music or radio.

◆By far the most successful strategy, especially if there are children in the car, is to turn the journey into a fun task of some kind. For example, children can be issued with an illustrated worksheet, offering them the chance to tick off things that they see-a blue motorway road sign, for example, or a particular kind of tree.

◆It is of course important to have sufficient provisions(儲備物) for the trip, with water on the top of the list. However, doctors are now warning parents against giving their children fast food items and fizzy(起泡的) drinks, the kind of things that cause hyperactivity and can create tension and problems.

Maybe you've lost your job.Maybe you didn't get the promotion you were hoping for.People say “Don't take it personally” and “Don't let it get to you,” but that's very hard to do.What are some strategies for making yourself feel better about yourself? It's pretty clear that repeating “I'm the greatest!” isn't a good way to build healthy self-esteem.What can you do to feel better?

Here are some strategies(策略)to try:

1.Do a good deed. You'll benefit as much as the person you're helping.I had a friend who went through a period of hardship : she was fired from her job,she didn't get into the graduate program to which she'd applied.Everything worked out fine in the end,and I asked her how she got through such a tough time. She said,“I was practically addicted to _______ for other people. It was the only way I could make myself feel like I wasn't a total loser.”

2.Keep a resolution. Not only will you benefit from exercising or cleaning out your garage, you'll also get a boost(提升)from the mere fact that you made a decision and stuck to it.

3.Become an expert.Pick a subject that interests you,and dig in deep:the history,Photoshop,or Kufu. This can be hard, because learning something new can also make you feel bad and stupid. So if you're less likely to stick with it,you won't benefit as much. However, there is great satisfaction in mastery.

4.Boost your energy.Studies show that when you're feeling energetic, you're much more likely to feel good about yourself. Most important: get enough sleep,if you need an emergency! energy fix, take a quick ten-minute walk, listen to some great music,or talk to a friend.

5.Challenge yourself physically. This strategy doesn't work for me,but I know that many people feel great after para-sailing,white-water rafting,or bungee-jumping.If you feel those are too exciting,a run,a bike ride,or spinning class can do it.

1.What is the best title of the passage? (Answer within 10 words)

2.Fill in the blank with proper sentence or words according to the passage.(Please answer within 10 words.)

3.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

If you become a master in something, you'll feel content with yourself.

4.What other strategy have you ever tried in your personal experience? ( Please answer within 20 words.)

5.Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
