In early 2007 I had bought tickets to a Christian concert for myself and two other family members, but later I decided to   36  my 4-year-old son along.

I couldn't find another ticket in the area we were sitting in, so I started   37  online for four tickets so we could all   38 . I knew it had to be God, so after getting   41  the initial(最初的)shock I decided to   42  the front row tickets, which still left me   43  the three original tickets. Not knowing what to   44  with them, I asked around but did not have any   45 . Then my husband said two of his customers wanted to go to the same   46  but couldn't afford it.

We went to their house and they said they had a friend they wanted to take with them.   47 it turned out, this couple does a prison ministry and had been   48  this concert for quite a while, but even after offering to pay me I   49  and told them to continue working in the prisons teaching those men and women to become   50   people. This couple lost a   51  several years ago and listening to this music could    52  them in their healing process. The   53   of this particular concert was "Give It Away", and I thank God for the   54   to give this to them.

It turned out to be one of the best nights for all of us, and it was all   55  my 4-year-old boy wanted to hear the music as well.

One day while shopping in a small town in southern California, it was my misfortune to be approached by a clerk. He seemed most unfriendly and not at all concerned about my intended purchase.I bought nothing, and marched angrily out of the store.
On the outside was a dark-skinned young man in his early twenties. His expressive brown eyes met and held mine, and in the next instant a beautiful, bright smile covered his face.I gave in immediately. The power of that broad smile dissolved all bitterness within me, and I felt the muscles in my own face happily responding.
"Beautiful day, isn't it?" I remarked, passing. Then I turned back."I really owe you a debt of thanks," I said softly.
His smile deepened, but he made no attempt to answer.A Mexican woman and two men were standing nearby. The woman stepped forward and volunteered, "Sir, but he doesn't speak English.Do you want me to tell him something?" In that moment I felt transformed. The young man's smile had made a big person of me.My friendliness and good will toward all mankind stand ten feet tall.
“Yes,” my reply was enthusiastic and sincere, “tell him I said, ‘Thank you!’”
“Thank you?” The woman seemed slightly puzzled.
I gave her arm a friendly pat as I turned to leave."Just tell him that," I insisted."He'll understand.I am sure!"
Oh, what a smile can do! Although I have never seen that young man again, I shall never forget the lesson he taught me that morning. From that day on, I became smile-conscious, and I practice the art diligently anywhere and everywhere, with everybody.

With his game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, Jeremy Lin (林書豪) finished the New York Knicks' dramatic reversed(扭轉(zhuǎn)) victory to defeat the Toronto Rapters.

The Knicks have won six games in a row, and Jeremy Lin has put up impressive numbers during the continuous period of competitions. Although the season is still young, the Knicks have reversed course in just one week from the NBA's most disappointing team to a playoff (季后賽) contestant. Lin, not team's high-paid stars, has saved the Knicks season and likely coach D'Antoni's job.

After nearly 15 years of disappointing, sometimes unsuccessful seasons, Madison Square Garden is alive again, and New York City can't stop talking about the Knicks. To put things into perspective(角度), consider this: Just several years back, Knicks fans protested nightly outside of the Garden calling for the team's ownership to fire their resented coach Isiah Thomas.

Now, Madison Square Garden Co. shares are at a record high, the Knicks' average household television rating is up 70 percent since Lin joined the starting lineup (首發(fā)陣容), and jersey sales are increasing very quickly. I watched the Knicks-Lakers game at a bar in Harlem, and have not felt that kind of energy from fans since the great playoff between the Knicks and Miami Heat in the late 1990s.

Beyond the Knicks, Lin may be saving the NBA as well. Just a few months back, the NBA took a massive credibility(威信)hit during a multi-month lockout(停工), where the owners did not allow the players to go back to play until they accept the new salary levels. As a consequence, the season did not even begin until Christmas Day. Over the past few years, LeBron James' (勒布朗﹒詹姆斯) relatively long and unpleasant free-agent (自由職業(yè)球員) events, combined with poor play around the league, have angered fans and damaged the league's brand.

Lin is leading a one-week NBA basketball revival. His legendary story has inspired Asian-Americans, increased NBA sales in China, and turned the basketball world upside down.

1.The passage is mainly about______

A. why the New Yorkers thought well of Jeremy Lin

B. why Jeremy Lin became a member of the Knicks

C. how the Knicks defeated its opponents in a great playoff

D. how Jeremy Lin saved the Knicks, probably including the NBA

2.According to the passage, Jeremy Lin's excellent performance saved the following except___

A. The NBA

B. Coach Isiah Thomas

C. The Knicks

D. Madison Square Garden Co.’s shares

3.The underlined word “young” in Paragraph 2 probably means "______"

A. not old yet.  B. not completely grown.

C. in the development  D. in the early stage

4.The NBA suffered the credibility crisis months ago because____

A. The NBA delayed the season because of players’ wage disagreements

B. the NBA was disappointed at James’ free-agent event.

C. The NBA canceled the basketball match for the coming Christmas

D. James had a bad performance in the basketball court

5.Which one of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. These Knicks’ stars who were paid well saved the Knicks season

B. The Knicks didn’t satisfy its fans for nearly 15 years until this season

C. The fans objected to dismissing Coach Isiah Thomas outside the Garden

D. The owners and the players didn’t agree on raising the TV ratings

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆廣東省十校高三上學(xué)期第一次聯(lián)考英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

I wasn’t surprised when I read that actress Helen Hunt recently stated that she would never allow her young daughter to become a child star. Ms Hunt is the daughter of a Hollywood technical director, and grew up in Hollywood. Now in her late 40s, she started acting and modeling when she was eight and has probably seen a lot over those years in show business.

She has had a successful career. She earned four Golden Globes and four Emmys. She also attained the top honor of her profession when she won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the 1992 movie, As Good As It Gets. Given those accolades, Ms Hunt is successful. There is no doubt that her early experiences as a child star prepared her for what has been an outstanding adult career. Given those achievements, why would this star declare she’ll never allow her daughter, now at the age of six, to follow in her footsteps?

Everyone familiar with the entertainment scene is aware of the reasons for her attitude. Recent tabloid (小報(bào)) news headlines featuring the troubles of former child stars, among them Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and the late Gary Coleman, may answer the question. Although Ms Hunt managed to become a successful grown-up star, she apparently believes she’s an exception.

What Ms Hunt may be suggesting is that many very young stars go through unnatural childhoods on movie and TV sets. While they’re earning big incomes, they’re so pampered (縱容) by directors and praised by fans; they may get false impressions that their lives will always be that way. Then, within a few years, when faced with reality, they’re hurt and confused. After all the overwhelming affection, they find they can’t deal with the problems. That’s often when drugs and alcohol take over their lives.

Helen Hunt has some other reasons why she doesn’t want her daughter to be in the entertainment business. Many child stars can never make a successful transition to meaningful adulthood. However, as with many Hollywood movies, I believe there are both good and bad scenes about how it can be played out in real life.

1.According to the passage, Ms Hunt _________.

A. started acting and modeling when she was a little girl

B. has been acting for about 30 years

C. is the daughter of a famous actor

D. started singing when she was eight

2.The underlined word “accolades” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”.

A. difficulties              B. awards                    C. salaries          D. opinions

3.The author thinks Helen Hunt’s success is mainly due to _________.

A. her hard work                B. the help of a technical director

C. her experiences as a child star   D. her talent and good luck

4.Helen Hunt wouldn’t allow her daughter to become a child star because she thinks _________.

A. child stars often take drugs and alcohol

B. being a child star may ruin her future

C. child stars aren’t able to solve their problems

D. it is difficult to succeed as a child actor

5.From the passage we can conclude that _________.

A. few child stars will succeed in the future

B. there is no way to save the entertainment business

C. the author has a different opinion about child stars

D. meaningful adulthood only belongs to non-child stars

In the early part of the twentieth century, racism was widespread in the United States. Many African Americans were not given equal opportunities in education or employment. Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was an African American woman who gained fame as a concert singer in this climate of racism. She was born in Philadelphia and sang in church choirs during her childhood. When she applied for admission to a local music school in 1917, she was turned down because she was black. Unable to attend music school, she began her career as a singer for church gatherings. She sang instead at the Lincoln Memorial for over 75 000 people. In 1955, Anderson became the first black soloist to sing win the Metropolitan Opera of New York City. Many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal characteristics, accomplishments (才藝), and values. I have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and intelligence. There are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our future. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father.

As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be “Daddy’s little girl.” While growing up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbours without a father or father-like figure around. This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children’s lives. In my early life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people. Whenever I feel like giving up, or having a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others’ needs ahead of your own, but not to the point they will begin to take advantage of you. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his open mind, enthusiasm for work and people around, and sense of understanding. He is a very reserved man, but to everybody’s surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends.

Living in his affection and instruction, I am very proud of my father. He also professes how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in whatever we are involved in.

1.What is the best title for the passage?

A. How my father loved me as “Daddy’s little girl”.

B. My father – the person I admire most.

C. I am the apple on my father’s palm.

D. My father – the person who loved me most.

2.Which of the following could NOT be used to describe the writer’s father?

A. Considerate and humourous.          B. Affectionate and open-minded.

C. Energetic and helpful.                D. Knowledgeable and sociable.

3.Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “excel” in Paragraph 2?

A. Be more powerful than others.        B. Be richer than others.

C. Do better than others.               D. Be more charming than others.

4.By saying “you have to put others’ needs ahead of your own, but not to the point they will begin to take advantage of you” in Paragraph 2, the father was telling the writer to ______.

A. think for others and help them, but not to be made use of in negative ways

B. think for others and help them, so that you can make use of them to serve you

C. try to make use of those who want to do so to you

D. try to be good to those who are worth making friends with

5.What can we infer about the writer?

A. She appreciated her father because he solved all the problems for her.

B. She was outstanding in work because her father pushed her too hard.

C. She considered her father silly and often laughed at him.

D. She has a strong sense of sympathy towards other people.
