About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!
There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green - a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.
Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

A. Women are more careful.
B. There are fewer color-blind women
C. Women are fonder of driving than men.
D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.
4.Which of the statements about the color- blind is true?
A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.
B. None of them can see deep red.
C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

Optimism and pessimism are both powerful forces. Each of us must choose which we want to ______ our future and our expectations. We can choose to laugh or cry, bless or ______. It’s our decision: from which perspective do we want to view life? Will we look up in ______ or down in desperation?
I believe in the upward look. I choose to ______ the positive and skip right over the negative.
An optimistic attitude is not a luxury(奢侈品); it’s a(n) ______. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, how you perform, and how well you will get along with other people. ______, negative thoughts, attitudes, and expectations ______ themselves; they become a self-fulfilling prophecy (預言). Pessimism creates a dark place where no one wants to live.
Years ago, I drove into a service station to get some gas. It was a beautiful day, and I was feeling great. As I walked into the station to pay for the gas, the attendant said to me, “How do you feel?” That seemed like a(n) ______ question, but I felt fine and told him so. “You don’t look well,” he replied. This ______ me completely by surprise. A little ______ confidently, I told him that I had ______ felt better. Without hesitation, he continued to tell me how bad I looked and that my skin appeared yellow.
By the time I left the service station, I was feeling a little ______. About a block away, I ______ over to the side of the road to look at my face in the mirror. How did I feel? Was I affected with jaundice(黃疸)? Was everything all right? By the time I got home, I was beginning to feel a little nauseous(惡心). Did I have a bad liver? Had I ______ some rare disease?
On another beautiful day, when I went into that gas station, feeling _____ again, I figured out what had happened. The place had recently been painted a bright, distasteful ______, and the light reflecting ______ the walls made everyone inside look as though they had hepatitis(肝炎)! I wondered how many other folks had ______ the way I did. I had let one short conversation with a total ______ change my attitude for an entire day. He told me I looked sick, and before long, I was actually feeling sick. That single ______ observation had a great effect on the way I felt and acted.
The only thing more powerful than negativism is a word of optimism and hope. When a whole culture adopts an upward look, incredible things can be accomplished.

Have you ever been sad because of failure? Please remember, for quite often achieving what you set out do is not the most important thing.
A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar. He showed it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and confidently, “Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I’ve found during this period!”
The boy’s goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to go on. And that is what a goal is for-to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look at what I’ve found along the way! There are so many wonderful things having come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. It is the unexpected joy on the journey that really makes sense.
1.The older boys laughed at the boy because he was thought to be______.
A. braveB. impolite
C. foolishD. warm-hearted
2. Why did the boy show the jar to the older boys?
A. To drive them away.
B. To show what he had found in digging.
C. To show how beautiful the jar was.
D. To attract them to join him in the work.
3.What can be learnt from the fourth paragraph of the text?
A. No dream can come true.
B. All work will end successfully.
C. Goals shouldn’t be set too high.
D. Goals will make us work harder.
4.The best title for the text should be______.
A. A Boy Dug a Hole
B. Joy in the Journey
C. No Pain, No Gains
D. Failure Is the Mother of Success

Love to sink into your chairs and relax when you get to school? Then you will not be happy to hear that schools all over the world are seriously considering exchanging traditional desks for ones with no seats at all — Yes, that means you will be encouraged to stand through those already too long math and science lessons! Why would anyone even think of putting kids to such cruelty? Experts say it improves their health and helps fight obesity. While that may seem a little far-fetched (牽強的), the officials at the few schools around the world seem to agree.
Among them are educators from the College Station Independent School District in Texas, who recently completed a week-long experiment involving 480 students across three elementary schools. The 374 kids that agreed to participate in the study were provided with a device that helped record step count and calorie consumption over the entire period.
All 25 teachers involved in the study reported that students appeared to be more alert and concentrate better, when allowed to stand. The one thing that did surprise the researchers was that younger kids were more willing to stay standing than kids in higher grades. They believe this may have something to do with the fact that after years of being asked to “sit still”, older kids have a harder time adjusting to this unexpected freedom.
American schools are not the only ones reporting success with stand-up desks. Four Catholic schools in Perth, Australia, which have been testing them since October 2013, have seen similar results. In May 2014, Grove House Primary School in Bradford, West Yorkshire, became Europe’s first test one, with a seven-week trial that involved the use of desks made by Ergotron in their fifth-grade classrooms. While official results are not out yet, early reactions from both teachers and students, have been extremely encouraging.
The findings of these studies and others done previously, all seem to mean that allowing kids to move around in classrooms is a win-win for students and teachers — it helps kids get healthier and provides educators with a more engaged audience.
1.According to the teachers, older students may not like stand-up desks because ____________.
A. they are cleverer than younger students
B. they are easily tired of standing long
C. they have formed the habit of sitting
D. they do badly in class while standing
2.What is most likely to be the result of the seven-week trial?
A. The standing desks can’t be used at all.
B. It is good for students to use stand-up desks.
C. More tests should be done in other schools.
D. The students are different in personality.
3.Why do the teachers like the standing desks?
A. Because the educators can draw the students’ attention.
B. Because the teachers can keep the students healthy.
C. Because the students can have a walk in the classroom..
D. Because the standing desks can keep the students concentrated.
