Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?

As we grow up,we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on.Once this value system is set up,it's not easy to change later in life.

Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.

According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are:the ant,the cricket and the snail.

The ant-works first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don't care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.

The cricket-fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.

The snail-lives under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure whether they can afford it.This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

1.People with the character of the snail would like to __________.

A.enjoy life at the moment without thinking much about the future

B.put work before everything else

C.live a luxury life at all costs

D.take the risk of investing a large sum of money

2.Our beliefs and values are affected by the following except __________.

A.society B.our family C.education D.money

3.This passage mainly talks about __________.

A.the spending nature of people

B.the relation between man and insects

C.the insects in nature

D.the problems with dealing with money

4.Which of the following has the character that the author prefers?

A.The ant B.The cricket

C.The snail D.None of the above

Dear David,

I’m glad you would like to share your feelings with me.It’s hardly surprising that your feelings of not being “grown up” have come on strongly at this point in your life, just before you’re about to become a father. You are asking:will I make a good father? How will I cope?

Should I have brought another little person into the world? Can l provide for it? Help! I think nearly every sensitive about-to-be-parent must have these occasional feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy(不適)before the birth and it would be most unusual if you didn't share them. It's difficult, honestly,to feel grown-up unless you have something less grown-up to relate to.

The boss with a hen-pecking wife may feel like a seven-year-old when he’s at home. But as he walks through the office door, and knows he’s going to be surrounded by staff looking to him for Advice,he grows into a fully mature man.And I think it’s a mistake to imagine that we all feel,as we age,a kind of progression of states, from the baby to the adult. Most people feel,on Tuesday, about three years old,and on a Wednesday, around 80.

There's a common remark that “all men are little boys”,but it's not true. It's more true that men often behave like little boys. But nearly all people,at some moments in their lives, are capable of groat maturity.

Once your baby arrives, you’ll soon feel less childlike,or rather, less often. When your child tries to put its fingers into the electric plug, the adult in you will rise up to prevent it.You’ll see

you have very little in common with a needy child, particularly if it's looking to you for comfort and support.

Comfort yourself,David, with two truths. One is that your friends laugh when they talk about this subject because they, like you, feel frightened. And remember that people who haven't grown

up don’t go around talking about the fact that they don’t feel grown-up.

Hope my advice will be helpful and good luck to you and your little one.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Advice

Money has always complicated our social lives. A question in October from a woman wondering whether she should attend her neighbors’ holiday parties broke my heart: “I am not able to do the same in return, and I just feel like a freeloader to do so,” she wrote. “I’m not even in a position this year to take an appropriate thank?you gift with me.” I told her to go, of course.

Meanwhile, hosts worried about the costs of entertaining — the hosts who write to me, anyway. On the other hand, the hosts that guests write to me about have taken some extreme measures to reduce the cost of their hospitality. These range from a dinner party where a relative of the host explained how expensive the steaks were and “rather pointedly suggested” that the letter writer “make a financial contribution” to the cost of dinner, to some Cape Cod homeowners who invited a couple to spend a weekend with them — as long as they brought their own food, bottled water, and toilet paper.

Weddings and other special events always create extra sources of stress, worsened by the fact that people rarely want to talk honestly about their money situations. One couple chose to have only a civil wedding ceremony for financial reasons and wondered how to tell people this without going into too much detail. A sixty?something couple needed to cut back on Christmas gifts to their children but weren’t sure how to tell them about it. People who had been laid off wondered how to notify friends, respond to inquiries about their job search, and compete with former colleagues for positions.

If you are searching for the answers to them, write to me—an advice columnist.

1.The underlined word “freeloader” in the 1st paragraph showed the woman’s ________.

A. disapproval B. happiness

C. confusion D. agreement

2.What bothered the hosts mentioned in Paragraph 2 most in their social lives?

A. Steaks. B. Entertainment.

C. Cost. D. Thank?you gifts.

3.What would you be expected to do if you were invited to spend a weekend with some Cape Cod homeowners?

A. Ask someone for advice.

B. Get your food and water ready.

C. Bring a bottle of wine with you.

D. Make a financial contribution to the cost.

4.What makes the social life even worse?

A. Weddings and other social events.

B. Being laid off and notifying friends.

C. Cutting back the costs for lack of money.

D. Telling others about their financial troubles.
