Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they must have   36   how difficult it is to write a   37   children's book.  Either the author has aimed too   38. , so that the children can't follow what is in his (or more often, her) story,   39   the story seems to be talking to the readers.
The best children's books are  40   very difficult nor very simple, and satisfy both the 41  who hears the story and the adult who   42    it. Unfortunately, there are in fact  43   books like this,  44   the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not   45   to solve.
This may be why many of books regarded as  46   of children's literature were in fact written for   47 . “Alice's Adventure in Wonderland” is perhaps the most   48   of this.
Children, left for themselves, often 49  the worst possible interest in literature. Just  leave a child in bookshop or  50 and he will more  willingly choose the books 51 in an imaginative way, or have a look at most children's comics (連環(huán)畫), full of the stories and jokes to which both teachers and right-thinking parents  52  .
Perhaps we parents should stop trying to persuade children into   53   our taste in literature. After all children and adults are so   54  that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the  55  books. So I suppose we'll just have to compromise(妥協(xié)) over that bedtime story.

Many people seem to think that science fiction is typified by the Bug-eyed Monster, embodying every feature that most people find unpleasant. This is unfortunate because it degrades a worthwhile literary endeavor. Instead, the basic interest of science fiction lies in the relation between man and his technology and between man and the universe. Science fiction is a literature of change and a literature of the future, and the aspects of human life that it considers make it well worth reading and studying for no other literary form does quite the same things. What is science fiction? To begin, the following definition should be helpful: science fiction is a literary subgenre which postulates(以…為前提) a change (for human beings) from conditions as we know them and follows the implications of these changes to a conclusion.?
The first point that science fiction is a literary subgenre is a very important one, but one which is often overlooked. Specifically, science fiction is either a short story or a novel. There are only a few dramas which could be called science fiction; the body of poetry that might be labeled science fiction is only slightly larger. To say that science fiction is a subgenre of prose fiction(小說) is to say that it has all the basic characteristics and serves the same basic functions in much the same way as prose fiction in general, that is, it shares a great deal with all other novels and short stories.
Everything that can be said about prose fiction, in general, applies to science fiction. Every piece of science fiction, whether short story or novel, must have a narrator, a story, a plot, characters, setting, and language. The themes of science fiction are concerned with interpreting man’s nature and experience around him. Themes in science fiction are constructed and presented in exactly the same ways that themes are dealt with in any other kind of fiction. They are the result to a particular combination of a narrator, story, plot, character, setting, and language. In short, the reasons for reading and enjoying science fiction, and the ways of studying and analyzing it, are basically the same as they would be for any other story or novel.?
51.From the first paragraph, we can infer that science fiction has been most popular in the 20th century because ____.?
A with the growth of literacy, the size of the reading public has increased?
B competition from television has created a demand for more exciting fiction?
C science fiction is easier to understand than other kinds of fiction?
D the increased importance of technology has given science fiction an increased relevance
52.According to the definition in the passage, a fictional work that places human beings in a prehistoric world inhabited by dinosaurs____.?
A cannot be called science fiction because it does not deal with the future?
B cannot be called science fiction because it doesn’t deal with technology?
C can be called science fiction because it deals with man’s relation with the world?
D can be called science fiction because it places people in an environment different from the one we know?
53. Science fiction is called a literary subgenre because____.?
A it is not important enough to be a literary genre?
B it cannot be made into a dramatic presentation?
C it shares characteristics with other types of prose fiction?
D it has its limits?
54.One implication of the final sentence in the passage is that____.?
A the reader should turn next to commentaries on general fiction?
B there is no reason for any reader not to like science fiction?
C the reader should compare other novels and stories to science fiction?
D those who can appreciate prose fiction can appreciate science fiction?
55.An appropriate title for this passage would be____.?
A Man and the Universe?
B Toward a Definition of Science Fiction?
C A Type of Prose Fiction?
D The Bug-Eyed Monster??

This year 2,300 teenagers ( young people aged from 13-19 ) from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions (印象) of the real American teenagers. American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and have a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In return, George's son, Mike, spent a year in Fred's home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected — much harder. Students rose respectfully (尊敬地) when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The family's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than one of the members. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize (批評) American schools.” he says. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”
小題1:The whole exchange program is mainly to ____.
A.help teenagers in other countries know the real America
B.send students in America to travel in Germany
C.let students learn something about other countries
D.have teenagers learn new languages
小題2:What did Fred and Mike agree on?

小題3: What is particular (特別的) in American schools?
A.There is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings.
B.There are a lot of after-school activities.
C.Students usually take 14 subjects in all.

小題4:What did Mike think after experiencing the American school life?
A.A better education should include something good from both America and Germany.
B.German schools trained students to be better citizens.
C.American schools were not as good as German schools.
D.The easy life in the American school was more helpful to students.

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk.Gestures are the "silent language" of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say.It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.
In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak,it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder, some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug(擁抱).
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle,so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say,"Pardon me." or "Excuse me."Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so,it means you are bored, hiding something,or are not interested. But when you stare at someone,it is not polite.
For Americans,thumbs-up;means yes, very good,or well done.Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are singing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger.Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.

For many employers, Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites are already a threat (威脅) that cut into productivity. Now they have something else to worry about—the games hosted by these sites.
This new type of social gaming is called "asynchronous" gaming and allows people to play with their friends without having to be online at the same time. The low-intensity (低強度) engagement has made games such as FarmVille, Cafe World and Pet Society popular among employees who often log on during office hours.
"What we are seeing is that more and more people and organizations are recognizing the productivity lost so probably more chief information officers are blocking Facebook applications," Rebecca Wettemann of Nucleus Research said.
Boston-based Nucleus Research, which conducted a recent study into the effects of social networking sites on productivity, said nearly half of office employees in the United States access social networking sites at work, which leads to an average loss of 1.5 percent of total office productivity.
Facebook, which has 350 million users, says at least 20 percent of its members play games online.Sebastien de Halleux, CEO and co-founder of online game creator Playfish, said Asia is growing at a faster pace than other regions."We had no idea that it would spread so fast...when we had 100,000 users after one month, we thought it was the biggest success ever. Now with 60 million users we think this is only the beginning of something much bigger," he added.
Zynga's FarmVille, the best known game with over 70 million active users to date, allows players to own a virtual farm where they can grow crops and raise animals.
While companies try to limit access to social networking sites, not everyone sees the games as harmful.

The huge Florida wetland known as the Everglades is a slow-moving river 80 kilometres wide but only a few centimeters deep. People call the Everglades a “river of grass” because sawgrass covers most of it. Sawgrass is not really grass. It is a plant that has leaves edged with tiny sharp teeth that can easily cut through clothes—and skin!
Travel in the Everglades is difficult. You cannot walk through shallow water because the sawgrass will cut you. The water is too shallow for regular boats. So, we use an airboat. An airboat is a flat, open boat. Like an airplane, it has a big propeller to move it. The propeller is fixed on the rear of the boat. It makes a tremendous noise, but it does the job. The boat skims along the water’s surface. Although we can still get lost in an airboat, at least we are above the alligators(短吻鱷).
While hundreds of different kinds of animals live in the Everglades, the most famous is surely the alligator. Once endangered, alligators are now protected within Everglades National Park. Visitors are likely to see them both on land and in water.
For a long time, dangers have threatened the Everglades. Around 1900, some people felt this precious wetland should be drained (排干). They said it was just a big swamp and not good for anything. In the 1920s, there was a land boom in Florida. People wanted to build homes everywhere, including in the Everglades. They built canals, levees (防洪堤) , and other water systems that stopped the rivers flowing into the Everglades. Factories were built near rivers that flowed into the wetland. These factories dumped poisonous waste that damaged the Everglades ecosystem.
? People are now working to preserve the Everglades National Park for the future. Right now, one big problem is the paperbark tree. This tree is an invader from Australia.
Paperbark trees soak up a lot of water. In the early 1900s, people brought them to Florida because they thought they would help drain the Everglades. However, the invaders adapted too well. Paperbark trees have taken over hundreds of thousands of acres of the Everglades and killed other trees. Scientists are cutting down these invaders or spraying them with herbicides (除草劑) to kill them. ?
小題1:Which helps to explain why it is difficult to travel in Everglades?
A.Airboats may make a very big noise.
B.You may get lost when passing through.
C.Paperbark trees soak up too much water there.
D.Many different kinds of animals are to be protected.
小題2:Why do people use airboats instead of normal boats?
A.They have big propellers to move them faster than alligators.
B.The propeller makes loud noise so as to scare alligators.
C.Their flat bottom can skim along the water surface.
D.They can watch alligators without hurting them. ?
小題3:The following measures were taken to drain the Everglades except that people______. ?
A.built canals and levees to stop the rivers flowing into Everglades?
B.built factories near rivers that flowed into the wetland?
C.brought Paperbark to soak up water in Everglades?
D.a(chǎn)re cutting down these Paperbark trees?
小題4:The underlined word "invader" probably means something______. ?
A.that moves in from another placeB.that enters and takes control?

Do people in your country hug in the street? In some countries, it is common for people to show affection(親密) in public places. In the United States, for example, we often see couples hold hands, hug and kiss on the street, in the park, in the restaurant and even on trains and buses. But in some other countries, people never show affection in public places because their customs don’t permit this, for example, in Korea and China. So, when Korean and Chinese people visit the United States, they sometimes feel very surprised when they see Americans hug and kiss on the street.

A team from Krakow, in Poland, used functional magnetic resonance imaging (機能性核共振成像)(FMRI)to assess brain activity when 40 volunteers were shown various images.Men showed activity in areas which dealt with what action they should take in order to avoid or face up to danger. But the study found more activity in the emotional centers of women's brains. The researchers, from another university, carried out scans on 21 men and 19 women.Brain activity was monitored while the volunteers were shown images of objects and images from ordinary life designed to remind different emotional states.
The images were displayed in two runs. For the first run, only negative pictures were shown. For the second run, only positive pictures were shown.
While viewing the negative images, women showed stronger and broader activity in the left thalamus(神經(jīng)床).This is an area which passes sense information to the pain and pleasure centres of the brain.Men showed more activity in an area of the brain called the left insula(腦島), which plays a key role in controlling natural functions, including breath, heart rate and digestion.Generally, activity in this area tells the body to either run away from danger, or meet it head on - the so-called "fight or flight response".
While viewing positive images, women showed stronger activity in an area of the brain associated with memory. With men, the stronger activity was recorded in an area associated with visual processing.Dr Urbanik believes these differences suggest women may analyze positive stimuli(刺激)in a broader social context and associate positive images with a particular memory.
For instance, viewing a picture of a smiling child might remind memories of a woman's own child at this age.On the contrary, male responses tend to be less emotional.
1.The research shows that men response differently to__________compared with women.
A.different images    B.ordinary life
C.different activities        D.medical scan
2.According to the passage, when faced with danger, ____________.
A.women react more slowly than men       B.women usually try to avoid it
C.men usually have no reaction         D.men react to it more directly
3.What is discussed in the 4 th paragraph?         .
A.Men and women’s different memories   B.The different responses to the children
C.Different reactions to positive stimuli    D.Negative results of the visual processing
3.The passage mainly develops______.
A.by inferring                   B.by comparing
C.by listing examples       D.by giving explanations
