Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids (小行星) now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it, say some scientists.
Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids (流星) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don’t threaten us. But there are also thousands whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.
Buy $50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $100 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we’ll have a way to change its course.
Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn’t be cheap.
Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare-but if one did fall, it would be the end of the world. If we don’t take care of these big asteroids, they’ll take care of us,” says one scientist. “It’s that simple.”
The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “ The world has less to fear from doomsday (毀滅性的) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,” said a New York Times article.
66. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?
A.They are heavenly bodies different in composition.
B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.
C. There are more asteroids than meteoroids.
D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.
67. What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?
A. It is very unlikely but the danger exists.
B. Such a collision might occur once every 25 years.
C. Collisions of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected.
D. It’s still too early to say whether such a collision might occur.
68. What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapons to alter the course of asteroids?
A. It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.
B. It may create more problems than it might solve.
C. It is a waste of money because a collision of asteroids with Earth is very unlikely.
D. Further research should be done before it is proved applicable.
69. We can conclude from the passage that ________
A. while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world.
B. asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future.
C. the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime
D. workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth.

Though “nanometer”(納米) is now a fashionable term all over the world, few people know
exactly what it is. It has become a new favorite of manufacturers and sellers in recent years. Many “high-tech” products bearing the name “nano” have entered the market, bringing more mysterious feeling to surprised consumers.
Nanometer is a very small length unit of measure, and is very small. One millimeter is 1000 micrometers, and one micrometer is 1000 nanometers. That is,one nanometer is one billionth of a meter.Nano materials are solid materials composed of particles(粒子)or crystallites(晶體) of less than 100 nanometer in size. Then,is a cup made of nano material really any different from an ordinary cup in function as far as how it works?
Are nano cups really so wonderful?A reporter went to the Institute of Nanomedicine, which is the first such institute of such a sort in the world and the only one in China, specializing in researching the investigation  of the application of nano technology into medicine.
A water molecule(分子) is composed of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.It can be changed only by special manipulation of the atoms. The material constituting the cup can have ananometer particles . But it cannot change the chemical and physical properties of the water contained in it.The water in the cup is still water. When people drink it,it will produce no special effect on human body.
Professor Ji who worked in the Instiute of Nanomedicine told the reporter, so far, the investigation of nano materials is still limited in the laboratory. No commercial micro products can be produced yet. With the present level of science and technology, the time of everyday goods made of nanometer materials is still years away.
The products labeled with nano marks in the market now are only traditional products coated with a thin layer of nanometer material, which makes them more abrasion resistant(耐磨), much easier to be cleaned, or oil resisting or moth proof(防蛀).
Professor Ji explained that nano cup is a real up. It can also be included in the list of nano products in a certain sense. But the nano up has not changed its property and function as a cup. It is not a magical medicine for curing and health care.
72.Which of the following shows the right relationship?
A.nanometer<millimeter<micrometer<meter
B.micrometer<millimeter<nanometer<meter
C.nanometer<micrometer<millimeter<meter
D.millimeter<micrometer<nanometer<meter
73.It can be inferred from the passage that       .
A.nano materials have been put into use in daily goods
B.real nano products haven’t become available for people
C.the nano cup is very effective in curing and health care
D.real nano products are being produced by some companies

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit (學分) which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester (學期). A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably take four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows, a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective(預(yù)期的) employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm (熱情). The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities (權(quán)威). Any student who is thought to have broken rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

Climate change connected with the reduction of wetlands at the source of the country's two longest rivers, the Yangtze and the Yellow, has reduced the volume of water flowing into them, scientists said.
Scientists studied changes over past 40 years to the wetlands on the cold QinghaiTibet Plateau in west China where the two rivers have their sources.
They found the wetlands on the plateau have shrunk (減少) more than 10 percent over the past four years. The wetlands at the source of the Yangtze have suffered the most, decreasing by 29 percent.
About 17.5 percent of the small lakes at the source of the Yangtze have dried up, the scientists said.
“The wetland plays a key role in holding water and changing the water volume of the rivers,” Wang Xugen, a researcher, said.
“The reduction of the wetland on the plateau is closely connected with global warming,” Wang said, adding that even though rainfall has increased in the area, the reduction of the wetland has reduced the flow of the Yangtze and the Yellow.
Records by the weather station at the head of the Yangtze showed yearly rainfall at its source increased from 260 mm during 1991—2000 to 323 mm in the period 2001—2006.
“But the increased rainfall didn't lead to more water's flowing into the rivers because the evaporation (蒸發(fā)) was so fast as a result of global warming,” Li Shijie, a researcher, said.
Another study showed global warming had caused glaciers to get smaller, frozen earth to melt, grasslands to turn yellow and rivers to dry up.
The QinghaiTibet Plateau used to have 36 000 glaciers covering an area of 50 000 sq km. In the past 100 years, their area has been reduced by 30 percent.
60.According to the passage, the true statement of the following is that .
A.the wetlands at the source of the Yellow have decreased by 29 percent
B.there's no more water in about 17.5 percent of the small lakes at the source of the Yangtze
C.the reduction of the wetland on the plateau has nothing to do with global warming
D.yearly rainfall has increased from 260 mm to 323 mm in the past 15 years
61.Which of the following is NOT the result of global warming?
A.Frozen earth melts.  B.Evaporation becomes faster.
C.Sea level rises.      D.Plants grow better in greenhouses.
62.The area that the glaciers of the QinghaiTibet Plateau cover is now about sq km.
A.35 000  B.12 000  C.15 000  D.17 000
63.In the passage, plays a most important part in holding water and changing the volume of the rivers.
A.yearly rainfall  B.the evaporation  C.the wetland  D.climate change

In late March, Southwest University became the first school in China to open a 24-hour hotline providing suicide-prevention counseling.
College suicide is a heart-breaking and argumentative topic.Chinese college students have long been the focus of public attention: their youth, education and, most importantly, bright futures make them the envy of society.
However, in recent years, we've read more reports of student suicides.Perhaps that's simply because of society's attention with youth. But it could also signify the increasing troubled mental state of college students.
Many studies have sought to find out the causes of student suicides. Not surprisingly, the top factors usually include psychological and physical sickness, emotional trouble and peer pressure.Despair about their futures is also quickly becoming a leading factor: many students say they feel hopeless and confused about the direction of their careers in a crowded job market.
Thankfully, more and more universities and colleges are providing counseling services to address students' mental and psychological problems. These at least offer some comfort to students facing tough job prospects and personal difficulties.
From appointing in-house student counselors to setting up hotlines and recruiting students to help their troubled peers, many universities are making efforts to fight student depression. There is no denying that much remains to be done, but such efforts are already working, helping students and saving lives.
However, the most important front in this battle lies with the students themselves.Whatever efforts school officials make, it is up to students to realize their problems and ask for help.Unfortunately, many students considering suicide refuse to seek help.By shutting themselves away, they can easily fall into vicious cycles (惡性循環(huán)), becoming even more easily hurt to personal
difficulties and the pressures of the outside world.
While establishing better on-campus psychological education and outreach programs as a step forward, students themselves must actively reach out for help. These dangers are a reality for every
student, not only those who feel confused and depressed.
63.Why are there so many students that commit suicide?
A.Because of psychological and physical sickness.?
B.Because they feel hopeless and confused about their future.
C.Because of the emotional trouble.
D.All of the above.
64.According to the article, all of the following are right except ____.
A.No university in China had a whole day hotline about suicide-prevention before March.
B.Many people envy the college students their bright futures.
C.The students who feel confused and depressed may need psychological education.
D.The problems of student suicides indicate the increasing troubled mental state of youths.
65.The key to avoid student suicides is that ____.
A.parents communicate with their children and understand them
B.colleges and universities offer more help to students
C.students themselves realize their problems and seek help from others
D.friends give more comfort and show more understanding to the problem students
66.Which of the following can be the main idea for this article?
A.Help is at hand for suicidal students.
B.More college students commit suicide.
C.How can students avoid committing suicide?
D.Why do college students feel depressed?

Beyond two or three days, the world’s best weather forecasts are doubtful, and beyond six or seven they are worthless.
The Butterfly Effect is the reason. For small pieces of weather—to a global forecaster, small can mean thunder—storms and blizzards(暴風雪)—any prediction becomes worse rapidly. Errors and uncertainties increase, from dust devils and storms up to continent-size eddies(旋渦)that only satellites can see.
The modern weather models work with net-like points sixty miles apart, and even so,some starting data have to be guessed, since ground stations and satellites cannot see everywhere. But suppose the earth could be covered with sensors placed one foot apart, rising at one-foot intervals all the way to the top of the atmosphere. Suppose every sensor gives perfectly accurate readings of temperature, pressure, humidity(溫度), and any other data a weatherman would want. Exactly at noon a powerful computer takes all the data and calculates what will happen at each point at 12.01, then 12.02,then 12.03…the computer will still be unable to predict whether Princeton will have sun or rain one month away. At noon the spaces between the sensors will hide fluctuations(波動)that the computer will not know about. By 12.01,those fluctuations will already have created small errors one foot away. Soon the errors will have added to the ten-foot scale, and so on up to the size of the globe.
63.A weather forecast ____________ in the world.
A.is reliable within one or two days
B.is doubtful beyond 24 hours
C.becomes useless beyond two or three days
D.is still worthwhile in seven days
64.Usually there is a weather sub-station____________.
A.in every city B.every 60 miles
C.between two cities D.every one foot
65.Which of the following statements is true?
A.People have not placed sensors one foot apart in the atmosphere.
B.Scientists have already put sensors one foot apart in the world.
C.Every sensor gives perfectly accurate data a weatherman wants.
D.Ground weather stations and satellites can see every place on earth.
66.Our computer will not be able to know about fluctuations because ____________.
A.the sensors are not good enough
B.they are hidden by the spaces between the sensors
C.they are too far away
D.they move very fast

Cellphone feels like a part of your body? A global survey has found that most people can’t live without their mobiles, never leave home without them and, if given a choice, would rather lose their wallet.
Calling mobile phones the “remote control” for life, market research firm Synovate’s poll said cell phones are so ubiquitous that by last year more humans owned one than did not.
Three-quarters of the more than 8,000 respondents polled online in 11 countries said they take their phone with them everywhere, which Russians and Singaporeans the most attached.
More than a third also said they couldn’t live without their phone, topped by Taiwanese and again Singaporeans, while one in four would find it harder to replace the mobile than their purse.
Some two thirds of respondents go to bed with their phones nearby and can’t switch them off, even though they want to, because they’re afraid they’ll miss something.
Mobiles have changed the nature of relationships, with the survey finding a fifth of all respondents set up first dates via text and almost the same number use the same method to end a love affair.
Apart from the obvious calling and SMS-ing, the top three features people use regularly on their mobile phones globally are the alarm clock, the camera and the games.
As for email and Internet access, 17 percent of respondents said they checked their inboxes or surfed the Web on their phones, led by those in the United States and Britain.
One in 10 respondents log onto(注冊) social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace regularly via mobile, again led by Britain and the United States.
Not everyone is tech savvy(科技通), however,37 percent of respondents said they don’t know how to use all the functions on their phone.
1. How many people of all respondents end a love affair via text?
A. About 4,800.                          B. About 3,600.
C. About 2,400.                          D. About 1,600.

C. Taking photos.                            D. Surfing the Internet.
4. Which would be the best title of the passage?
A. People can live better without the cellphone.
B. People would rather lose their wallet than their cellphone.
C. Different uses of the cellphone.
D. New functions of the cellphone.
