People use money to buy food, books and hundreds of other things they need. When they work, they usually get pay in money.
Most of the money used today is made of metal or paper. But in the time long ago, people used to use all kinds of things as money. One of the first kind of money was shells(貝殼).
In China, cloth and knives were used as money. Elephant tusks(牙), monkey tail (尾巴)and salt were used in some parts in the world. Rice was also a kind of money used by the people in some islands. Some animals were used as money, too.
The first copper coins(銅幣)were made in China. They were round and had a square(正方形)hole(孔)in the centre. Different countries have used different metals for their money. Later, some countries began to make coins of gold(金) and silver(銀).
But even gold and silver were heavy to carry when people needed a lot of coins to buy something expensive(昂貴的). The Chinese were the first to use paper money.
The first paper money looked more like a note(收據(jù))from one person to another than the paper money used today.

Look at your watch for just one minute. During that time in 1981, 239 babies were born in the world. Perhaps you think that isn’t much. In the next hour, over 14,000 more babies will be born on the earth. Just think how many more babies there will be born in one year. If this goes hour after hour, what will happen in a hundred years?
The population problem may be the greatest one of the world today. Two thousand years ago, there were only 250 million people on the earth. Four hundred years ago, the number was over 500 million. The population may be 8,000 million by the year 2000.
In China, the population problem is quite great, too. The Party’s leaders are paying much attention to it, but lots of people don’t think so. They like to do what they want. Some love more children. Some wish to have both son and daughter. Other would like to have not only daughters but also sons. Haven’t they ever thought the population problem? If nothing is done to stop this, things will get worse and worse. The figure of the world’s population will certainly be a terrible one. There will be only standing room on the earth some day.

People like to say, "Behind every successful(成功的)man, there is a woman."
Now some women still like making their husbands and sons successful. But some women want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work, they want to be as successful as men.
Now many American women are working outside their homes. More than half of the women at the age of eighteen to sixty-five have got jobs. Working women have had more education (教育) than those who stay at home. Among women with jobs, eight out of ten, drive a car to work. And most of them often spend holidays away from home.
