Geography is the study of Earth and its climates. Scientists use it to study global (全球的) warming and
track (跟蹤) the weather. Governments use it to learn where people live and work and to plan what to do
with the land. It is now easier than ever to use geography because of a science called space technology.
The United States launched its first satellite in 1958. Some space missions (使命) that followed were
geographical studies. In fact, earth science is a big part of the work of the National Aeronautics and
 Space Administration(NASA).
Astronauts looked out of the space shuttle (航天飛機(jī)). They decided to take photographs of Earth
from their vantage point. Over the years, picture quality improved. Shuttle photography now shows land
features, such as rivers. It can even show the streets of large cities. Photos of the same places at different
times show how the land is changing.
NASA does not use just photographs, though. In 1958 it launched TIROS (the Television Infrared
Observation Satellite). This first use of a satellite to study Earth was effective (有效的) in giving weather
forecasts. It led to the creation of new space tools to use in geography.
The Landsat Program began in 1972. This satellite sent detailed (細(xì)致的) views of Earth from space.
The pictures were so precise (精確) that scientists could count the number and kinds of crops in a field.
Landsat showed where Earth's surface had faults along which earthquakes might happen. This information
helped in the planning of new cities and factories. Landsat also made discoveries. In Antarctica it located
ranges of unknown mountains. It pinpointed small lakes. in Virginia that were not on maps. Landsat, now
  more advanced, still flies today.
Another space tool is Earth Observing-1(EO-1). This spacecraft flies right behind Landsat. It takes
pictures of the same sites. The two sets of pictures, viewed together, show how cities grow and how other
places, such as rain forests, become smaller over time. This helps scientists learn how people affect (影
 響) geography.
One of the newest space tools is the Geographical Information Systems(GIS). GIS is computer
software  that helps scientists to study Earth. GIS is different from earlier space tools. Businesses, schools,
and even average people--not just the government--can use it to show them how changes in the planet
 might affect them.
1. Why do governments study geography according to the passage?
    A. To improve the environment.
    B. To make the land use plan.
    C. To make new discoveries.
    D. To count the crops in a field.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. The U.S. satellite program began in 1972.
    B. Landsat was able to take pictures of other planets.
    C. TIROS was successful in giving weather forecasts.
    D. GIS can only be used by the government.
3. EO-1 takes photographs of the same places as Landsat because _____.
    A. the two groups of pictures can show the changes of Earth
    B. EO-1 is practicing for future photography missions
    C. Landsat is out of date and new pictures are needed
    D. Landsat can't send detailed views of Earth from space
4. From the passage, we can infer that _____.
    A. GIS is the newest computer to study Earth
    B. NASA only depends on photos to study Earth
    C. satellite pictures can give more detailed information
    D. recent U. S. satellites are as advanced as the old ones

In a classroom in any countries, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language. He or she
teaches something behind-the culture(文化)of the country.
In a country such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together
and they pay much attention to personal ideas. Teachers try to make each student special. Students do
not have to remember a lot of information, instead, they work and find answers by themselves. There is
often discussion in the classroom.
At an early age students learn to have their own ideas. Their education encourages personal thought(思想).
       (3) The importance is placed on how to arrive at an answer and not only to get the correct answer.
In most Asian countries, people have the same language, history and culture. Perhaps for this reason,
the education there pays more attention to group goals than personal ideas. Children in China and Japan
often work together and help each other on homework. In the classroom, the ways of teaching are often
very traditional. The teacher says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the
students repeat(重復(fù)) rules or information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.
In many ways these differences come from different educational ideas. In Western countries teachers are
taught to help students to learn. They make it easier for the students to learn by themselves. (4) In some Asian countries, however, teachers often feel that their job is to pass knowledge to students.

Are you itching (癢癢)? Do you have mosquito bites (蚊蟲叮咬)? Well, if you lived in Texas, US, you
wouldn't have a problem. People found a very big spider's web (蜘蛛網(wǎng)) in the state park there. The web is
as long as two football fields. It covers trees, shrubs (灌木叢) and has caught millions of mosquitoes.
"At first it was so white it looked like fairyland (童話世界)," said Donna Garde, who works in the
park.
"Now it's filled with so many mosquitoes that it's turned a little brown. Sometimes you can hear
the screech (尖叫聲) of millions of mosquitoes caught in the web."
Scientists are trying to find out what kind of spider has spun the web and why it's so big. Some
think a group of spiders work together on the web.
Whatever it is, the web is surely better than bug spray (殺蟲劑).

studying grammar is a great way to learn a language.  He also thinks that watching English movies isn't
a bad way because he  can  watch  the  actors say the words. Sometimes, however, he finds watching
movies frustrating because the people speak tooquickly.
Liu  Chang  said  that  joining  the English  club  at  school was the best  way to improve her English.
Students get lots of practice and they also have  fun.  Sh e  added that having conversations with friends

     Does reading really matter?
Some people say that today, reading is not as important as it was. These days we have photographs,
films, radio and television. Why read a description of something when you can look at a photograph? Why read a newspaper when the latest news is brought to us every hour on radio and TV?
Photography was certainly a wonderful invention. Photographs can give a very clear idea of places and of people that we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全書) , for example, is always better when
it has good illustrations. But we also need words to explain the photographs and drawings. A photograph
of an elephant may give us a very good idea of what an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing about the different sorts of elephants there are and where they are found, their exact size and weight, how they can
be useful to man and so on.
In the same way, a good film has action, movement, color, and maybe music. These are things we do
not find on the printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an excellent
feature film. Reading a novel requires imagination. Each of us imagines a story differently.
Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some important news stories happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper does not just
report the news. It explains why something has been happening. It also contains interesting articles on
different subjects. Newspapers are an important part of our lives, if we want to understand what is going
on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.
Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a full life as human beings. Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read, the better
readers we become. And the better readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The secret is to get
the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.
1. What does the author think photographs can give us?
A. Enough information about people and places.
B. No information about things.
C. Some information about things but not enough.
D. The wrong information about things.
2. What does the author think newspapers can give us?
A. More information than television.
B. Less information than television.
C. More news from other countries.
D. Less information about important events than TV.
3. What does the "illustrations" mean?
A. Inventions.
B. Pictures
C. Words.
D. Ideas
4. What are the advantages of novel over a feature film?
A. There are more interesting subjects in novels.
B. We do not hear any music in a novel.
C. Novels always explain what is happening.
D. Novels make us use our imagination.
5. What does the author think about reading?
A. It is a wonderful invention.
B. It is an important part of our lives.
C. It requires no practices.
D. It is not as important as television.
