Pieter Bruegel was a famous artist who lived in Europe five hundred years ago. He is well known for a painting called Children’s Games. People like this painting because it is full of fun. It shows how children in Pieter’s time enjoyed themselves in different ways. In all, there are about eighty games being played in the painting.
Children’s Games shows a busy street scene in a town long ago. The street is a wide and open space. There are no cars, so there is plenty of room to play. There are about two hundred children in the painting. Some play in groups and others play alone. They seem to be enjoying their freedom in the fresh air and their games. Some of the games are still played today.
The games in the painting do not require children to spend money on extra materials(材料). Instead, they use simple everyday objects like hats and sticks. A game might need a rope, some chalk, a hoop, a spinning top, or even a barrel. Some games are played without any toys at all. For example, one scene in the painting shows children turning somersaults(翻筋斗) inside the fence.
Even though Pieter Bruegel lived a long time ago, children today can learn an important lesson from what he painted. The painting shows us how little we need in order to enjoy ourselves. All children really need is one another. It’s not the toys or games that are found in the stores that create fun. Using our imagination can do this for us.

A 10-year-old boy decided to learn judo though he had lost his left arm in a car accident. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move.
“ Master,” the boy finally asked, “shouldn’t I be learning more moves?” “ This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the teacher answered.
Several months later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent (對(duì)手) became impatient and charged; the boy skillfully used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the final.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. Soon after the match started, the boy seemed to lose. Thinking that the boy might get hurt, the judge called a time-out. He was going to stop the match when the teacher appeared. “ No,” the teacher said, “Let him continue.” A short time after the match carried on, his opponent made a careless mistake. At once, the boy used his move to pin (壓住) him. The boy won the match and the competition.
On the way home, the boy asked the teacher what was really in his mind. “ Why could I win the competition with only one move?” The teacher answered. “ First, you’ve mastered one of the most difficult throws in judo. Second, your opponent can only attack your left arm to win you.”

Long ago ,there lived in Greece a learned man. He was so well known for his good knowledge of almost everything that lots of people from all over the country came to learn from him. The great man taught his students whole-heartedly and answered their questions with great patience.
One day a student asked him, “ My dear teacher, didn’t you say you yourself have many ,many more questions about things than we do? But I think we students have far more than you.”
With a smile on his face, the teacher drew two circles ,one as large as a big cake, the other smaller. Then he said , “Of course, I have learned much more. But it’s wrong to think that a teacher has fewer questions than his students. Now, look at these two circles. The inside of the bigger one is my knowledge of things, and the inside of the smaller one is yours. Out of the circles is what is still unknown to us. Since mine is larger, I have to use the longer line to draw the bigger circle. That means I have more opportunities to face what is still unknown. On December 23, 2008, Niu Niu held a piano concert at the national Grand Theater (國(guó)家大劇院). As an eleven-year-old boy, he became the youngest pianist ever to perform a concert at the theater.
Never too young to learn
Niu Niu was born into a musical family in Xiamen. His father Zhang was a piano teacher. Niu Niu grew up listening to his father’s students playing the piano. At just three years old, Niu Niu asked his father to teach him to play, too.
“I gave Niu Niu some sheet music and helped him find the eight notes when he first played the piano. To my surprise, he played nearly 80 percent correct,” said the father. He used to think that three years old is too young an age to learn piano, but Niu Niu changed his mind. He continued to allow Niu Niu to watch his teaching of other students and gave him more sheet music to play.
Playing for fun
Zhang started teaching Niu Niu standard piano lessons when he was four. Unlike many other piano teachers, Zhang didn’t insist that Niu Niu play strictly with the correct finger positioning (位置). He said that the strict finger positioning would rob some kids of fun of playing. So Niu Niu could play in his own way. He could play the tone successfully. But Niu Niu was required to play the music without looking at the sheet music. Now he can remember about 80 pages.
Rising to fame
In 2003, at the age of 6, Niu Niu successfully held a sole concert in his hometown Xiamen. At the age of 8, he gave a performance at the International Piano Festival in France. At the age of 10, Niu Niu played in London and his performance was praised by Prince Charles. Last year, this young pianist published his first album “Niu Niu Plays Mozart” and over 10,000 copies have been sold in the world.
We are very glad to see a young Chinese pianist rising in the music world.
小題1:How old was Niu Niu when he performed a concert at the National Grand Theater?
小題2:What was Niu Niu’s father?
小題3:What did Niu Niu’s father feel when Niu Niu played nearly 80 percent of the sheet music correct?
