Volunteer

If you have no special plans for your free time,why not spend your time helping others? Don’t listen to people ho say that young people today often think only of

themselves. It is not true at all. More and more young people in the United States

volunteer (志愿，自愿) to spend their school holidays working for others. And they

don't do it for money. Here are some of their stories.

Alice Hamiton,17

I'm going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths (徒步小道) in the clean mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It will be nice,and I'll  be able to do something good at the same time!

Jason Moore,18

This summer,i’m  going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good,low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. TheyJ11 teach me what to do,so I'11 help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.

Trish Anderson,16

I'm  going to teach kids who have trouble in reading. I，11 work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day,P m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher,and I love children and reading,so this is going to be a great experience for me.

If you spend some time in an English-speaking country,you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and polite social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first,but it can be very useful to understand.

Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. For example,standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However,if you do this in Europe,some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China,we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine,but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example,most people would agree that talking loudly in a library,a museum or a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends,it is better to keep your voice down in public places.

If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette,we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone, Would you mind doing this or Would you mind not doing that. People donJ t usually like to be criticized,so we have to be careful how we do this.

Although rules of etiquette can often be different,some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world!For example,dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this， you can ask him, “Would you mind picking it up?”
