A large part of China experienced larger amounts of smog ( 霧霾 ) than usual this January and the air was badly polluted. The distance ( 距離 ) one could see was shorter than 1,000 meters in Beijing, Tianjin, and the provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shandong and Anhui. In some areas, it was down to 200 meters.
People usually set off firecrackers ( 爆竹 ) to celebrate Spring Festival. But because of the smog, this year seemed very quiet. It was really different. A man called Zhang Wei said that his friends and he hadn’t set off a single firecracker.

More Chinese looked forward to celebrating ( 慶祝 ) the holiday in a greener way . They decided not to set off firecrackers. They also decided not to waste food . They said the new celebrations sounded fashionable.

Music is different from songs. Songs express feelings with lyrics(歌詞), but music with tones (音調(diào)).Unlike songs, music tones in themselves have no specific meanings. Different people may get different things from the same musical performance. Though some music works are difficult to understand, people need music in their daily life because it brings fun to them. Different people like different music: some love classical music, and others take an interest in pop music. Most young people like pop music.
Pop music began in the USA and became popular around the world during the 1950s and 1960s.The best-known early kind of pop music was “rock and roll”. Pop music has taken the place of (取代)native music in many parts of the world. It has caused the number of people for “jazz” music to become much smaller than in the 1950s and earlier and it has now begun to become the most popular. Much pop music is without artistic value (藝術(shù)價(jià)值), but the works of some pop singers such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the groups like Pink Floyd and Crosby are excellent. DNA is the whole “map” of the human body. It is something that all human have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our parents, because we get some of their DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look the same as other people in our family. It is because of small things called “genes”(基因) in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are really messages. They’re written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, another two scientists found the first “word” that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell(細(xì)胞) to build its parts. So far, scientists have found all the words in the DNA map, but we still do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means, we can help to save people from several illnesses. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine and help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and and find out more information, we will use it in the wrong way, just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people getting jobs.

Cooperation is becoming one of     ways for people living in the developing society. As a saying goes, “ one tree doesn’t make a     ” .
