Samuel Johnson was one of the 18th century 9s most famous writers, best known for his The Dictionary of the English Language. The dictionary wasn?t the first English dictionary, but in many ways it was the most important dictionary in history.
In June 1746,a group of London booksellers contracted (簽約) Johnson to write a dictionary. It would list all the words in the English language in alphabetical order and give a meaning for each.
Johnson was a man of great learning. He searched books for words. Johnson also searched for sentences that showed how people used the words. He worked more than eight years.
In 1755 Johnson finished writing The Dictionary of the English Language. It had two volumes and 41 ,000 words. It was a huge success. This set of books became part of households and libraries all over England.
