Have you ever seen the film Titanic? “Titanic” was one of the largest and finest ships in 1912. It hit an iceberg(冰山)on its first sailing from England to America and sank very soon, leaving a love story to the people. Do you know what an iceberg is?
The earth is round, like a ball. The top of the earth is the north. The bottom of the earth is the south. At the top and the bottom of the earth, there is a lot of ice. It is very cold there. Sometimes there is no sunshine for many months. There is ice everywhere all the time. Large pieces of ice fall into the sea. They don’t go to the bottom of the sea. They float(漂浮)near the top of the water. We call these large pieces of ice “iceberg”. Some icebergs are bigger than a tall building. Icebergs are dangerous for ships. Sometimes a ship hits an iceberg.
Then the ship sinks.
You can make a small iceberg. Put a piece of ice in a glass of water. Look ar it. The ice does not sink.

A couple of years ago, I went to Australia for a meeting with my friend, Chris. We decided to drive across country to Brisbane after the meeting ended. The drive was going to take four days and most of it was across the desert,    81
The first day was a lot of fun as we were excited and laughing at each other’s stupid jokes. By the third day of driving in the seemingly endless desert, we began to get bored. We had been quiet for a few hours when in the distance Chris found some kangaroos. We were both excited and decided to get a closer look.   82  We got closer and closer, and Chris was doing 110 kilometers per hour. We were very close to the kangaroos—too close—when we heard a loud BANG!
Chris stopped the car and we got out. Behind the car was a larger kangaroo lying completely still on the ground.    83  He took off his sunglasses and put them on the kangaroo and did the same with his jacket. Then, he put his arm around the kangaroo and told me to take a photo of them together.   84  While I was focusing the camera, I saw the kangaroo move. It suddenly woke up, looked at Chris, and jumped away into the distance before we could do anything.
I started laughing but Chris looked very serious.   85   I started laughing even harder. I stopped laughing, however, when he said that our car keys were also in the jacket!
A. Chris speeded up to catch up with the kangaroos.
B. He said his wallet and passport were in the jacket.
C. In order to get there in three days, we drove very fast.
D. so we had to take food, water, and extra gas with us.

You know you have to read "between the lines" to get the most out of anything. I want
to tell you something important during your reading.
You shouldn’t mark a book which isn’t yours.   61  If you think it useful to mark
books, you will have to buy them.
There are two ways in which one can own a book. The first is to get the right by paying
for it, just as you pay for clothes and furniture. But full ownership comes only when you
have made it a part of yourself.   62
There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the best sellers -- unread and untouched. The second has a great many books.   63  The third has a few dog-eared (翻折的) books, which are marked from front to back.
Why is marking a book necessary? First, it keeps you awake. In the second place, reading is thinking.   64  The marked book is usually the thought-through book. Finally, writing helps you remember the thoughts you had, or the thoughts the writer expressed.
If reading is to learn anything more than passing time, it must be active. The book you
read for pleasure can be read in a state of relaxation, and nothing is lost. But for a great book,
rich in ideas, reading must be active.   65  You should come up with an understanding of
what you have read.

閱讀短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下面的問題,將答案寫在答題卡相應題號后的橫線上。
Charter schools in the US operate with public money but without many of the rules that govern traditional public schools. In the United States the rules for charter schools are different from state to state. But in general these schools have greater freedom to decide what and how to teach.
A charter school might have nothing to do with the local public school system. It might be started by teachers, parents, community groups or a profit-making business.
Forty-seven million students go to traditional public schools. And more than a million students go to charter schools.
And now a group of charter schools have formed the Green Charter Schools Network. The idea is to have environment friendly school buildings but also to go further than that.
The schools teach students to give lots of time and attention to the community problems that affect them and the environment. For example, young children grow vegetables in a school garden and learn about healthy eating. Older students help recycle waste from restaurants. And local schools share what they grow in community gardens with people in need.
Jim McGrath is president of the Green Charter Schools Network. He says there are about two hundred “green” charter schools across the United States. And the Green Charter Schools Network holds its first national conference this October in Minnesota. Supporters of green schools say their goal is to let the movement be popular across the country.
小題1:. Are the rules for charter schools the same in the US?
小題2:. How many students go to charter schools?
小題3:. What do students in charter schools often do?
小題4:. Do teachers teach students to protect the environment or to know the Network?
小題5:. Why do supporters hope charter schools to be popular across the country?
