People show their personalities in their clothes, their cars and their homes. Because we might choose some foods to “tell” people something about us, our diets can also be an expression of our personalities. For example, some people eat mainly gourmet (供美食家享用的)foods, such as caviar (魚(yú)子醬) and lobster (龍蝦), and they eat only in expensive restaurants. They know about the “better things in life”.
People can eat many different kinds of foods, but some people choose not to eat meat. Vegetarians(素食主義者) often have more in common(相同) than just their diets. Their personalities might be the same too. For example, vegetarians in the US and Canada may be creative(創(chuàng)造性的) people, and they might not enjoy competitive(競(jìng)爭(zhēng)性的) sports or jobs. They worry about the health of the world, and they are probably strongly opposed (反對(duì)的) to wars(戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)).
Some people eat mostly fast food. One study shows that many fast-food eaters have a lot in common with one another, but they are very different from vegetarians. They are competitive and good at business. They are also usually in a hurry. Many fast-food eaters might not agree with this description(描述) of their personalities, but it is a common picture of them.

We spend hours, days and years of our lives in school. Imagine you could design your dream school, what would it be like? What would you be doing? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is what they said:
Richard from the USA: My dream school would have a big swimming pool and two soccer fields. It would also have a cinema, a gym and a shopping center. My school has none of these, and I think there should be more pleasant things for students to do while they are studying.
Sonia from Italy: I’d like a room where we can relax and play computer games. I’d also like to have a music room. I think there should be a place for everyone to go and relax after class. Wu from Beijing: I think it would be great to have another day off (休息日) every week, besides the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. What fun! I also think school should start later, at about 10 o’clock, and finish earlier.

A recent research shows that physical activity(體育活動(dòng)) may help students do better in their classes. The research comes because educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like P.E. class.
Researchers go over the results of fourteen studies. Twelve were from the United States, one from Canada and one from South Africa. The studies appeared between 2009 and 2013. They included more than 55,000 children, aged six to eighteen.
Thomas Singh, one of the researchers, says the studies showed a relationship between physical activity and scores on subjects such as math, English and reading. Ms. Singh offers some possible explanations (解釋):
“ There are, first, physiological (生理的) explanations, like more blood flow, and so more oxygen (氧氣) to the brain. Being physically active means there are more hormones( 荷爾蒙) produced like endorphins ( 腦內(nèi)啡). And endorphins make your stress level lower and your mood improved, which means you will perform better in class. Also, students who take part in organized sports learn rules and how to follow them. This could improve their classroom behavior and help them know what they should do.
All in all, the finding tells us that physically active kids are more likely to do better in school. Ms. Singh says schools should consider the finding before they cut physical education programs.
【小題1】What led the researchers to do the studies?
A.Schools’cutting physical activity. |
B.Their interest in physical activity. |
C.The tests including about 55,000 children. |
D.Kids’unsatisfying schooling performance. |
A.14. | B.12 | C.2. | D.3. |
A.Getting more blood flow. |
B.Better classroom behavior. |
C.Feeling relaxed and refreshed. |
D.Greater ability to organize activities. |

New changes have taken place in Paris in recent years. Paris used to be among Europe’s busiest cities. Traffic jams could be seen all the time. But now there is a new 2.5 kilometre-long car-free area inside the city. The Louvre(盧浮宮) attracts world tourists. 閱讀下列短文,根據(jù)短文信息完成文后表格,每空一詞。
Making a public speech is the thing that most people don’t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talking, Although I’m a shy man, I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
Keep your speech simple. Your audience can’t take all of your main ideas, and they can only remember one or two of them, not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can’t express what you want to say, then your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience won’t, either.
Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is, you have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or begin, what main points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(關(guān)鍵的): the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not, they will be confused.
Keep your speech not long. The standard (標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的) length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t put their minds in one thing for too long time, which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反應(yīng)),the audience will get bored. Of course, your speech will fail.
Following these suggestions above, you can make a good speech in public, and you will be an excellent speaker, I think.
Title: How to make a 1 speech
Technique | Reasons | Requirements |
Keep it simple | You should think about your idea well enough | 3 one or two of your main ideas well. |
If you have a 2 idea of what you want to say, your audience will have, too.
Organize it well. | You should get your speech well 4 | Know very well about the 6 ,main points and ending of the speech |
If you don’t, the 5 will be confused.
Keep it 7 | Your speech should be short enough to attract your audience’s attention and 8 . | Make your speech as short as 10 . |
If you don’t, the audience will feel 9 . |
