Researchers have found that there are some basic things that you can do to become happier.
◆Self
Yourself includes your education, your health, and your sense of purpose. It is important to take care of yourself and to connect the people around you. First, find a hobby. This gives you a chance to meet people with similar interests. You can also volunteer. Volunteering takes the focus off your own problems and makes you feel grateful for what you have.
◆Home
Create a quieter, dark area where you can sit and relax. Paint your living room yellow – it can increase energy and improve mood (情緒). It also helps to own a pet. Pets can make their owners feel calm, and provide love and friendship.
◆Financial (財務(wù)的) life
According to Ed Diener, the key to greater well-being is to have money, but not to want it too much. Try to spend money on things that give you long-lasting pleasure. Buy things that will enrich your life, such as music lessons and dinners with friends and family.
◆Social life
Have friends that encourage you to eat right, to be active, to laugh, and to do your best. Meet with your friends regularly and share with them when you have more of something than you need. Support each other in difficult times.
◆Workplace
Your office should be a place that you like. Find a job with people that you enjoy being around. That includes your boss. And do something that you feel strongly about. That is more important than money.
◆Community
If possible, live near people who have about the same amount of money as you. This makes you less aware (意識到的) of what you don’t have. Live in a neighborhood where you feel safe and where you can walk a lot. Walking makes you healthier, and healthier people are happier people.

Have you ever wondered what an American high school is really like? This article will describe a typical (典型的) high school and its students.
A typical American high school has several large buildings and enough space for about 1,500 students. Every student is given a locker. When students first arrive at school, they go straight to their lockers to put away or get their textbooks and to hang up their outdoor clothes. As American textbooks are expensive, students would rather loan(租借) than buy them. Students must pay back if they lost any of them.
American students have different types of school transport. They usually take a yellow school bus or walk to school if they live close enough. Sometimes their parents drive them to school. When they turn 16 years of age, most take a free driving class at school for one term. If students earn passing grades in the class and also pass their state driver’s exam, they can begin driving themselves to school.
Each day, students take six or seven classes. They must take science, math, English and social studies. They can choose art, homemaking, fashion design and other classes. In some schools students are required to take one or more of the following special classes: health education, physical education or foreign language studies. Students move to different classrooms for each subject. This is because each teacher has their own classroom. There is a five-minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry to their next class.
The regular school day usually ends early in the afternoon. After school more than half of the students are involved in after-school activities. These activities include sports-especially football, basketball, baseball and soccer or clubs, such as yearbook, speech, school newspaper, photograph or student government.

There was a lovely vegetable patch (菜園). A large tree grew there. Both the patch and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knew that the vegetables and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow (陰影), because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the vegetables because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live.
The situation became so serious that the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree answered back by not protecting the vegetables from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the vegetables were really weak, and the tree was drying up.
The gardener wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. As my friend was passing some elephants,he suddenly stopped. He was confused by the fact that these huge animals were being held by nothing but a small rope. The rope was tied to their front legs. It was       that the elephants could break away from the ropes at any time. But for some         ,they did not.
My friend saw a trainer nearby and asked why these elephants just stood there and didn't        to get away.
“Well,” he said,“when they are very           and much smaller,we use the same size rope to tie them.At that age,it's enough to hold them.As they grow up,they are used to         that they cannot break away. They believe the rope can       hold them,so they never try to break free.”
My friend was amazed. These animals could at any time break free,      because they believed they couldn't,they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go       life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we      at it once before? How many of us are being held back by old, outdated        that no longer serve us?

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi driver as an example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high- class Bens with a fare (車費) of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to take you to any place you want to, say that you have some business to attend to (料理), and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver will not be anxious.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests (客人), but also serve outside eaters. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining room to have their meals. The only thing they need to do is to show their cards to the waiter. You can easily use any old room card to take a couple of friends to eat dinner without paying.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. But to my surprise, they can remember everything so clearly that the workers only need to say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid by their boss.
With so many loopholes (漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven (天堂) to those who love to take “small advantages”. But the strange thing is: all the taxi passengers will always come back to pay their fare after they have dealt with their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms; and workers always give an honest answer of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good trust in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman (紳士)”.
【小題1】Are the Finns really foolish?
【小題2】 What is the taxi fare in Finland?
【小題3】Who can have free dinner in hotels?
【小題4】Will the Finnish workers get paid by the hour or by the day?
【小題5】 What do you think of the people in Finland?
