Perhaps the only test score that I remembered is 55when I was in high school.
The test was the final for a course. I remembered waiting anxiously as my teacher Mr. Right passed out our papers one by one. It was a rather difficult test. I heard my classmates groaning, and I could tell by groans that the scores weren’t looking good.
Mr. Right put my paper on my desk. There was a big red number, circled to draw attention. It was my score,55 ! I lowered my head, and covered the score up quickly. 55 was not something that you wanted your classmates to see.
"The scores were not very good, and none of you passed,M Mr. Right said. "The highest score in the class was 55. . That's my score!
Suddenly my sad look didn't look so bad. I had the highest score. I felt a lot better. I walked home alone that day with the low it high score. My father knew that I had a big test that day anj asked me as soon as I got home,M How did you do in your tesff’1 ”1 macfe 55,n I said. A frown (皺眉) now stood on my father's face. I thought that explanation would make a difference. ” You failed!" my father replied.'But it's the highest!’ I insisted. ” I don't care what scores others had,but you failed. What matters is what you do!" my father firmly said.
For years,my father was always that way. It didn9t matter what others did. It only mattered what I did and what I didn't do.

English surnames have an interesting history. In early times people had just one name that they were given at birth. It might have been John or Hilda, for example. One name was quite enough. If someone mentioned Hilda or John, everyone knew who was meant because there would be only one Hilda or one John in a tiny village. But as time went on,small villages grew into towns. Then there might be five or six Johns and five or six Hildas all living in the same place. How were people to know which John or which Hilda was meant then?
One way of getting over the difficulty was by adding the name of the work the person did. Thus the man who was a cook might be called John the Cook. The man who weaved clothes might be called John the Weaver. Second names or,surnames as we now call them, had come into being. At that time these surnames were given to a man's children. So John Weaver's children would, perhaps,be called Hilda Weaver and Charles Weaver. And this is how we still use surnames today.
Another way of telling one person from another with the same name was by adding the place where they lived. Thus the two men in the same village, both with the name of Tom,might be known as Tom by the Wood and Tom in the Field. This would give rise to such surnames as Wood,Field,Street,Tree,Pond,Lake,Forest, etc.
The origin of many surnames is easy to find. But how others started is difficult to know. Only scholars who have studied the history of words can tell the origin of the more difficult ones, and even then they can't always be sure.
