Robert lives in a small town. Five years ago, when he was nineteen, he finished middle school. He didn’t like any subjects except playing when he was at school. Of course he learned nothing and the bosses wouldn’t use a man like him. He has to stay at home, but doesn’t do any housework, only watches TV or lies on bed. It makes his parents angry. After the killer earthquake hit Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008, love and charity(慈善) began spreading through China from all over the world. Rebuilding after the quake begins now, and it will last long into the future. First of all, the most important thing is to help the people in the disaster area take care of their mental(心理的) health.
Here are Professor Le’s suggestions:
Dos: Do have enough sleep every day.
Do stay with your family and friends.
Do treat yourself to healthy food.

Don’t feel shy to talk to others how you feel. Try to get them to understand you and they can help you.
Don’t run away when your relatives talk about their experience during the earthquake.
Don’t force yourself and your family to forget the disaster.

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, pretended(假裝) not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
My mother has realized the disadvantages of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker(股票經(jīng)紀人). I said in a voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he doesn’t send me the check. It’s already two weeks late.”
And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather anxious .You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” Then she talked more loudly. “What does he want? I’ll come to New York and say it in front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t accept any more excuses. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed (使困窘) me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is clear and direct. It was the language that helped me form the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

According to a new survey, student safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50% of students say they are worried about robbery(搶劫) on the way to and from school. Now in many big cities in China, some schools have taught an unusual lesson: self-protection(自我保護). Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring classes. And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens.
Chen Haoyu, a teacher at Beijing No.25 Middle School and a self-protection expert(專家), gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.
If you are robbed
Keep calm. If you can not cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. Try to
remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.
If you are in a traffic accident
If a car hurts you, you should remember the car number; if it is a bicycle, try to call your
parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don’t know how badly you are hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lightning(閃電)
Don’t stay in high places and keep away from trees.
When there is a fire
Get away as fast as you can. Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit (出口).
Do not take the lift!
If someone is drowning (溺水)
If you can’t swim, don’t get into the water. Cry out for help. Remember that danger is never as far away as you think. Take care of yourself at all times!

One day, a man found the cocoon (繭) of a butterfly and he brought it home.
A few days later, the man saw a small hole in the cocoon. He sat and watched for several hours as a butterfly struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it stopped.
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a knife and cut a bigger hole in the cocoon. The butterfly came out of the cocoon but it had a weak body and small, thin wings. The butterfly didn’t start to fly.
In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬行) around with a weak body and thin wings. It was never able to fly.
The man acted with kindness but he didn’t understand that he had done something wrong. When a butterfly crawls out of the cocoon, it must struggle. The hard work of getting out of the cocoon forces the fluid(液體) from the butterfly’s body into wings. It helps the butterfly be ready to fly. If the butterfly never has to force itself out of the cocoon, its wings never get the fluid and it can never fly.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If we lived our lives without any problems, we would never learn or grow. We would not be as strong as we could have been and we would never fly.
So, the next time you are faced with a challenge or a problem, remember the butterfly.
