The first Earth Hour was held in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals(個(gè)體) and more than two thousand businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later Earth Hour had grown into a global event with more than 50 million people across 35 countries and territories(行政區(qū))participating(參加). Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent(緊急) by the hour. In March 2009, millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries and territories have promised their official support for the event. On Saturday 27 March, Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour. A record said 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action.
The event is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as the WWF. The organizers say climate change is one of the greatest threats(威脅) facing wildlife and nature. They also say when it comes to save energy and money, big changes start with small steps like turning out the lights. Now people are all joining together in a global effort to show that it’s possible to work on global warming. Earth Hour has brought about some new changes to our lives. People join in activities such as candle-lit dinners and star-gazing parties as a response to the call for "going dark".
This year , Earth Hour is asking people to take the next step and go beyond one hour. So if you haven’t done so, next year, late half past eight to half past nine, let us turn off the lights for one hour for the environment! Earth Hour is a call to stand up, to take responsibility(責(zé)任) and to get involved(與……有關(guān)) in working towards a better future. Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. Everyone can make a difference.

Chris Jones recently completed a very unusual journey. Our reporter Mary Owen met him at his home in the south of London and be told her all about the trip.
Reporter: What gave you the idea to make a trip around India on an elephant, Chris?
Chris: Well, it all started the idea two years ago when I was planning a trip to India. I visited a photo exhibition of elephants and I realized that the only enjoyable way to make a trip around India was on an elephant.
Reporter: What did you do next?
Chris: I flew to New Delhi and started looking for an elephant, I needed an elephant trained to carry people. I didn’t know anything about elephants, so I asked an expert(專家) for help. He taught me how to ride an elephant. He also helped me find an elephant.
Reporter: How long did it take to find a suitable elephant?
Chris: Not too long. I bought a female elephant called Tara for about 6, 000 dollars.
Reporter: Can you tell me about the journey?
Chris: Tara and I set off from New Delhi a week later. We were going to Sonepur in northern India. There is a big elephant market there and I could sell Tara easily. And what a ride! Elephants can travel at about 6 miles an hour and Sonepur is more than 1, 200 km away. It took us 64 days to complete the journey.
Reporter: Did you have any problems on your journey?
Chris: Yes, a few. But nothing serious. On the third day, Tara hurt her foot. Btu that got better quickly. Also, there was a lot of heavy rain during the first week and we got very wet!
Reporter: What happened when you reached Sonepur?
Chris: My plan was to sell Tara. But I was very fond of her. I couldn’t take her back to Britain and I didn’t want to sell her at the market. I happened to meet some people who wanted an elephant for their national park in southern India. I knew that Tara would be safe with them, so I gave her to them. I was very sad to say goodbye.
