As is known to all, waste has become a more and more serious problem. We can easily see many people throw a lot of food into the garbage can. Some people spend thousands of yuan buying fashionable clothes. What do you think of them? Here are some of students’ opinions:

Mary

As for me, I believe “Waste not, want not.” As we know, there are still millions of Chinese living in a poor condition. We can never afford waste. Therefore, it is no doubt that saving is still a good habit that we should not give up. I do not like the men who spend their money in a wrong way. They do not know waste is a bad thing. It can only make them happy for the time being.

Jacky

More and more people are no longer interested in the simple life style, including me. And I feel embarrassed to save the things I used. What I love is the latest fashion. In my eyes, saving is already out of style.

Sally

One of the best ways we students can do in this situation is to recycle the textbooks we are using everyday. After we've used them and are moving on to new ones, we should find ways to recycle these books instead of simply throwing them away. There are different ways to do so such as sending them to a recycling factory, reusing them for other purposes, passing them on to new students and so on.

Tim

The negative effects of waste can be shown as follows. Firstly, it makes some students ask their parents for money quite often, which is harmful to their development. If they don’t learn to support themselves, they will be “useless people” when they graduate. Secondly, it is not easy for our parents to arrange for our schooling. Last but not the least, just like what Mary said that our country is still poor. There are many people who cannot go to university and many poor people still need our help.

When something becomes fashionable very quickly , we say that it’s a “craze”. The latest craze is sometimes a style of clothes or a hairstyle. Sometimes it is a game or a TV programme.
In the 20th century a lot of crazes started in the USA and then became popular in the USA andthen became popular in other parts of the world. American youth culture has spread through tourism , TV , films, magazines and music videos.
One of the biggest crazes was the hula hoop(呼啦圈). Hula hoops are not popular now, but in the1950s they were a sensation.  An American company called Wham-O started to make plastic(塑料的)hoops toys, and in the USA the company sold 100 million hoops in a year.
Frisbees(飛盤)were another Wham-O product(產(chǎn)品). Some people say that the idea
started in the factory of the Frisbee Baking Company in Connecticut. Workers there threw metal pans to each other during their breaks. Two businessmen made a plastic type of the flying pans,  and sold their products to Wham-O. They became a big business.
So businesses usually help to produce a craze. Yoyos were another example. In the Philippines,  where its name means “comeback”, the yoyo was a popular toy in the 1920s. But it didn’t become a global (世界性的) craze until an American called Donald Duncan bought the idea and sold it to the world. Around 100 million people bought yoyos in 1962 and 1963.
Most crazes come and go, but sometimes they survive. When the big skateboard started in California in 1965, many parents and governments said that the boards were dangerous, and they were not allowed in some areas. But the boards became popular again and they are still an important part of youth culture today.

Much has been said and written about heroes now, mainly because many people think we have too few of them. There are many different kinds of heroes, but they usually seem to have two things. First, heroes show their great power by actions. Second, heroes can be tested by the time. Because of these good points, we need to choose our heroes carefully.

Olympic winner Jackie Joyner-Kersee tells young people to work hard. She hopes that if someone tries to copy her, it will be because she has got success by working hard. She says that a hero should affect another person’s life.
Poet Maya Angelou believes that a hero encourages people to treat others well. A hero should show politeness, courage, patience, and strength all the time. A hero should encourage others to follow him with actions, even though only in small ways.
Author Daniel Boorstin suggests that, “Celebrities are people who appear on newspapers, but heroes are people who make history.” If a person is truly a hero, he or she will not be soon forgotten.
We all need heroes. We need to be able to respect (尊重) people around us. Many times , the greatest heroes are the people we can see every day — our relatives, friends, and neighbours — who will never give up when facing difficulty. The parent who supports our family, the teacher who will make more money at another job but chooses to help students — all these people can be considered as heroes. A hero sets a good example, an example that encourages others to follow.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the local people of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the local people become unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy(經(jīng)濟). It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance(推進) the well-being (health and happiness) of local people.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a lot of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads and other support facilities needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.
