When you feel sad, tears will come down from your eyes. When you are happy, especially when you laugh hard, tears will also come down from your eyes. But tears have a more important job than showing your feelings.
Tears keep your eyes clean and healthy. They wash away dirt and germs(細(xì)菌) just like bath. Your eyes also need tears to keep them wet. And eyes must be wet so that they can move smoothly. Your eyes are busy looking here and there all day long. They move quickly from one thing to another. If you didn’t have tears, your eyes couldn’t move, and soon you would be blind.
Maybe you don’t like tears, but your eyes can’t do without them.

“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I was disappointed. “If you go on, one day something good will happen.” When I graduated from college, I decided to try for a job in a radio station and then work hard to become a sports announcer (廣播員).
I took a taxi to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station, but I was turned down every time because I didn’t have any working experience. Then, I went back home.
My father said Montgomery Ward wanted a sports-man to help them. I applied (申請(qǐng)), but I didn’t get the job, either. I was very disappointed.“Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. How can we improve our life? Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They’ll say, “this is my destiny (命運(yùn)). I cannot change it.”
Certainly not! You don’t have to suffer too much. Your destiny depends on yourself, not on any other factors.
I know someone who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV, then goes to sleep. Next day, the same routine cycle follows. Huh! Is this what she calls “doing her best”? She believes she has tried her best. But in fact she hasn’t.
Remember that you get what you pay. You just don’t sit around and wait for a million dollars to fall from the sky. You have to get off the couch, get your eyes off the TV screen, get your hands off the phone. Don’t expect your luck to change unless you do something about it. If something goes wrong, don’t just regard it as a little failure, but use it as feedback (反饋). Learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It’s not enough to think positively (積極地), you also have to act positively.
If someone’s life is in the trouble, do you just hope that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life. It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best. In other words, don’t just stand (or sit) there, do something to improve your life.
【小題1】The writer’s attitude towards destiny is that ________.
A.we can change it | B.we can’t depend on ourselves |
C.we must accept it | D.we have to suffer it |
A.Regard it as a little failure. | B.Get your hands off your phone. |
C.Sit around and wait for luck. | D.Do something to solve the problem. |
A.翻轉(zhuǎn) | B.關(guān)閉 |
C.變得 | D.清空 |
A.we only need to hope for the best in our life. |
B.we can get what we pay if we think positively. |
C.the woman has tried her best to improve her life. |
D.maybe our luck will change if we do something about the life |
A.Understand Yourself | B.Improve Your Life |
C.Believe in Yourself | D.Accept Your Life |

閱讀短文,根據(jù)要求完成下面各小題。
Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. This is why some friendships don’t last long .To have a friend, you must learn to be a good friend. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust(信任)one another. They should tell the truth. If you aren’t honest, you’ll lose your friend’s trust. (1)A study shows that those who often tell lies can’t get on well with the other people. Good friends always depend on one to speak and act honestly.
Generosity makes a friendship grow well. It means sharing. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend, you must listen and understand.(2)Try to put yourself in your friend’s place, or you can’t understand the problem better.
Now, do you know what you should do if you want to be a good friend and keep your friends?

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor, Dr. Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very kind person. When Dr. Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest. The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled(毀壞) them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker, so you had to make things difficult for them and pick out the weaker trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow(淺的) roots(根), and how trees that weren't watered had to grow deep roots in search of water under the earth by themselves. Deep roots were very important. So he never watered his trees. He'd planted an oak(橡樹)and instead of watering it every morning, he'd beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.
Dr. Gibbs died several years after I left home. Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I watched him plant about twenty-five years ago. They're very big and strong now. I planted some trees a few years back and carried water to them for a whole summer. After two years of caring too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they shake a lot.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. Mostly I pray (祈禱) that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties. There's always a cold wind blowing somewhere, so what we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we could face it strongly and won't be beaten down.
【小題1】We know from the passage, the doctor______.
A.didn't know how to plant trees at all |
B.wasn't good at his own medical job |
C.had his own ways of planting trees |

A.some weak trees would be easily found out at the beginning |

B.didn’t often water his trees |
C.didn’t have a large field |
D.took too much care of his trees |
A.his trees will be stronger than Dr.Gibbs′ |
B.his trees will not be beaten down |
C.his sons will be better at planting trees |
D.his sons will be able to face difficulties |
A.Watering Trees | B.Growing Roots |
C.Doctor and his Neighbor | D.Father and his Children |
