A Norman baron built Leeds Castle in 1119, and his family lived there for about 160 years. It then became a royal palace and the home of six queens of England, including the Spanish princess, Eleanor of Castle. From 1552 the castle was the home of a governor of Ireland, and it remained a private home until 1976.

Today the castle is a museum and conference center. Many of the rooms are the same as they were in the past, with old furniture and paintings. The King's Dining Room, more than twenty meters long, has furniture from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Queen's Room, which was a bedroom, a dining room and reception room, is decorated as it was in 1430. The Queen's Bathroom has a wooden bath where the queen washed. The Great Hall is now a museum. All these rooms are open to the public. Some other rooms--the library and the billiard room, for example--are used for seminars and meetings. These rooms have modern furniture and equipment.

The castle and its beautiful gardens are open to the public all year round.
