“Where there is a will, there is a way.”Perhaps not many students can understand this better than 21-year-old Michael Ha. Because of his story of success,he has become an example to many young people.
Michael Ha was born in a very poor family. His parents worked in Vietnam before they moved to Britain in 1980. They couldn’t find work in Britain because they spoke little English. The whole family had to live on benefits (救濟金) and they lived in a small house in Hackney,a poor area in East London. Growing up was not easy for Michael, but he never gave up.
At the age of 10 ,he set his heart on going to Cambridge University. It was not easy, either. Michael studied at a school, which used to be called “the worst school in Britain”. However, young Michael made up his mind to try his best,no matter what kind of school he was studying at. The smart boy studied very hard and did well in every subject at school. Once he made a bet (打賭) with his friend to learn further maths. As a result, after spending just four months teaching himself from a textbook,he got an A in AS-level further maths.
Now Michael is the star medical student at St. John's College,Cambridge and has just won an award (獎) for his excellent grades. He hopes he will be an inspiration for other young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

YL短文填空(2015 •重慶B卷)
根據(jù)下面短文內(nèi)容,在短文的空格處填上一個恰當?shù)?詞,使短文完整、通順。Which is better, writing or typing (打字) ?These days, many college students have given up taking class notes by hand. 1,they type on laptops (手提電腦) because they think typing is fast, and they can write more notes. But a new research has 2 that taking notes by hand is in fact better for long-term memory.
In this research, students were asked to listen to a teacher. Some took notes by typing on a laptop. The 3 took notes by writing them down. Then they were given a test. Both groups got almost the same result in 4 the facts. But students who typed their notes did worse on conceptual (需要理解的) questions.
Why is it like this? The answer is that writing by hand is slow,5 it gives the students more time to think about the questions they don't understand. They are 6 to write down the main points. “This leads to a deeper understanding ,” say the scientists.
However, the students typing notes on a laptop usually just write down what the 7 says word for word in class. Although they can write more notes, they just type without really thinking 8 what they are typing. “This usually leads to mindless transcription (抄錄) ”,say the scientists.
So if you want to remember something better, write it by hand!
