More than 50 music students of New Milford High School in New Jersey, US, got a letter from their headmaster. The letter said that the music department of the school was in big trouble. The students had to pass a test, or the department(系) would be shut down.
On a Saturday, two officials greeted the nervous students. They asked the students to play a piece by Richard Strauss. But they had to sing the words to the music – German words!
Other tasks were also difficult. One student had to sing Mary had a Little Lamb, a children’s song, in an operatic (歌劇的) voice.
After three hours of testing, students waited for the results. They met some students from the New Jersey Youth Orchestra (管弦樂團(tuán)). The judges(裁判員) gave them only a passing grade.
The worried New Milford students started to realize they had no chance. “I thought it was over,” said Bryan Olsen-Santana, a junior. “The person next to me was crying. I felt bad for her. I felt bad for myself, too, because music is everything to me.”
But then the headmaster came and told them something very dramatic (戲劇性的): “Someone’s played a joke on you!”
What was going on?
The test was part of a reality TV show (電視真人秀) called “Schooled”. The students’ parents, the school and a TV network had made it together.
Everything was fake. The two “officials” were really comedians (喜劇演員). The “students from New Jersey Youth Orchestra” were from another school. There were hidden cameras. The students’ parents were hiding as they watched.
As a reward for putting up with the joke, the students got gifts: MP3 players, digital cameras and school supplies. They were all from the show’s sponsor (贊助商).

What should you take in with you when you take an exam? Pen, pencil, eraser, ruler…, and don’t forget a bottle of water!
According to a study at the British Psychological ( 心理學(xué)的) Society Annual Conference held in London, students who bring water into exams may improve their grades by up to 10 percent.
Scientists at the University of East London and the University of Westminster, UK, did a study on 447 students. The students were studying for different degrees (學(xué)歷) at the University of East London. Only 25 percent of them entered the exam hall with something to drink.
Scientists then compared their exam results with their normal schoolwork grades. They found that all those who had brought drinks with them got better grades by between 2 and 10 percent.
It is unclear why drinking water improves exam results. But scientists say having enough water in our bodies and not feeling thirsty could have a helpful effect on our brains. Drinking water may also cut down on anxiety ( 焦慮), which has a bad effect on exam performances, according to Chris Pawson, PhD, of the University of East London.
“Whatever the explanation, it is clear that students should try hard to stay hydrated (含水的)with water during exams,” he said.
So next time, when you are going to have a big exam, try bringing a bottle of water with you.Who knows – it may help you pass the exam!
小題1:How much may the students improve their grades most if they bring water into exams?

According to a national study, in the summer of 2013, the long-term(長(zhǎng)期的) warm weather in the UK has made the number of butterflies increase.
Around 46,000 volunteers(志愿者) took part in the year’s Big Butterfly Count(統(tǒng)計(jì)), and they found 830,000 butterflies. Volunteers were asked to make a record. They would record how many times they found one of 21 different kinds of butterflies.
Later, the scientists used the records to find out how many butterflies of different kinds were found across the country. Then, they compared the results to the year before. They found that there was a rise in the number of 15 kinds of butterflies, and some of them went up by 50% compared to recent years. They said the increase in butterfly numbers was a result of warm weather.
However, scientists also said that the number of butterflies was in decline(下降) as a whole, and that we might not see the same result the next year.
Richard Fox, who works for Butterfly Conservation, said, “UK butterflies are in long-term decline. Studies have been done since the 1970s. They show that UK butterflies have declined in type and number.”
He added, “We must halt the long-term decline of these beautiful creatures(生物). The only way is by stopping the damage that has been done to the butterflies’ habitats(棲息地) across the UK.”

The 18-meter-tall Rubber Duck arrived in Beijing on Friday. It was placed on waters in the International Garden Expo Park, where the Yongding River passes through.
The Rubber Duck exhibition was designed by Dutch artist, Florentijn Hofman. It was part of the activities of Beijing Design Week, which ran from September 26 to October 3 in 2013.
The Rubber Duck stayed in the park until September 23, then moved to the Summer Palace, a famous Beijing tourist spot, where it was on display until October 26.
The duck is made of over 200 pieces of rubber. It was guarded not only by staff, but also by 10 volunteers wearing yellow T-shirts and hats with a rubber duck logo.
Sun Yidong, a volunteer who guided visitors to the duck, said the art brought energy to the traditional Chinese park.
“Seeing the giant Rubber Duck makes me feel like I’m a kid again.” Sun said.
Because of the rain on Friday, there were not too many people coming to see it. The Expo workers said they expected more people to come and visit the duck on weekends.
Zhao Yan said she had been following news about the duck since 2007, when the duck began its journey.
“I even considered going to Hong Kong to see it. It’s great that the duck is in Beijing,” Zhao said.

Astronauts, people who fly into space, need special training. First they go to Houston, Texas. That is the home of the Johnson Space Centre. There they are tested to see how strong and smart they are.
One of the first tests is for the heart. The people walk or run, then the space doctors see how fast their hearts are beating.
Another important test is performed. In this test the person must curl(蜷曲)his body up in a ball. When he is in that position, he is put into a round cloth bag. The doctors give him no idea how long he will have to stay in the bag. If a spaceship broke down in space, the astronauts would get into bags like this. Then they would have to wait and curl up in darkness, until help could arrive. You can see that an astronaut must not be afraid of tight space or darkness.
After the tests, only the best people are chosen to start astronaut training in a training centre. The astronauts in training learn many other things. They learn how to jump out of a moving airplane. They learn to how to blow up a lifeboat and get into it while they are in the ocean. The astronauts also have to learn how to get lifted out of the ocean by helicopter(直升機(jī)). That may look fun, but it can be dangerous.
After they finish training, the astronauts continue to work. They stay in good shape by running and doing exercise. They read about their special jobs. In that way they can learn new facts about space travel.
Then the big day comes. The astronaut is told to go to work on a flight into space. The crew members(全體船員)get to know each other first. Then they can learn which job each will do.
小題1:The astronauts don’t know how long they will stay in the bag in the test because ________________.
