The Christmas Eve meal is very important in most European countries. While other Christian families around the world celebrate this great meal with different kinds of meat, it is a tradition for Italians to eat seven different kinds of fish. Knowing how to ask for information and help politely is important. In English, “Where are the restrooms?” and “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?” are similar requests (請求) — both are correct English, but the first could sound rude. It’s important to use correct language, but sometimes this alone is not enough — we need to learn how to be polite when we make requests.

In English, just like in Chinese, we change the way we speak when talking with different people. The expressions you use might depend on whom you are speaking to or how well you know them. If you say to your teacher, “Where is my book?” this will sound rude. But if you say, “Excuse me, Mr West. Do you know where my book is?” your question will sound much more polite. On the other hand, it might be alright to say “Where is my book?” to the people you know well.
And you would not usually say, “Peter, lend me your pen.” A very direct order like this can sound rude in English. Usually in English polite questions are longer and include extra (附加的) language, such as “Could you please...?” or “Can I ask...?” It sounds more polite to say, “Peter, could you please lend me your pen?” If you stop a stranger in the street, we might first say, “Excuse me. I wonder if you can help me.” or “I’m sorry to trouble you but…” before asking him for help.
It might seem that speaking politely is more difficult than being direct, and in a way this may be true.
小題1:When we make requests, we need to speak in a ____ way.
A.politeB.carefulC.differentD.direct
小題2:You should say “____” when you ask a stranger for a way.
A.Which is the way to the zoo?
B.How can I get to the zoo?
C.Do you know the way to the zoo?
D.Excuse me. Can you tell me the way to the zoo?
小題3:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.We should use long sentences when we ask for information and help.
B.When we ask for help from others, polite language must be used.
C.The way of speaking is important when we ask different people for help.
D.In English, polite questions are as neccessary as rude and direct ones.

It's not just women who wear skirts. Men can wear them, too. In Scotland, men wear a kind of skirt called a kilt. The kilt is their national dress and an important part of their tradition (傳統(tǒng)).
A kilt is a colored skirt reaching down to the knees(膝蓋). It has checks (格子) on it with different colors, like red or blue. Each family in Scotland has its own colors.
How did the Scots start to wear kilts? There are many stories about it. One story is that the kilt was invented (發(fā)明) in the 1720s by an English factory owner, Thomas Rawlinson. Rawlinson had a lot of Scottish workers in his factory and he thought their clothing got in the way of their work. So he cut their long clothes into a shorter skirt.
Today, most Scotsmen see kilts as formal(正式)dresses. They usually only wear them at weddings or big dinners. There are only a few men who still wear a kilt every day. Scots also wear kilts in parades when they play their traditional musical instrument(樂器): bagpipes (風(fēng)笛). Years ago,if a teenager had some problems in his life,he might write them in his diary. Now he might get on the Internet and write them in his blog(博客). In many ways,a diary and a blog are almost the same. Then, what makes a blog different from a diary?
The biggest difference is that a blog is much more public than a diary. Anyone can read what you write in your blog. Usually,a teenager likes hiding his diary book and treats it as secret. If you are not satisfied with a friend and write something bad about him in your diary,he will never know it. However,if you do this on the Internet, that friend may read your blog and get angry. So we have to be careful of what we write.
A blog has good points,of course. People choose to write in blogs, they know that their friends will read what they write. If you feel sad one day and write in your diary,no one will know about it. If you write the same words in your blog, your friends may quickly write back to comfort you and offer their help. Blogs help people know what their friends are doing.
Though it's a good way to write blogs about everyday life,I still prefer my old diary.
