My earliest memory of dad is grabbing (抓住) his hand while we walked together. As I    older, I remembered my father and I listened to many basketball games on the radio. I always fell asleep    the game was over. When I woke up in the morning, the score sheet (計分表) with the    score on it would be lying next to me. I’ll always remember that.
On cold mornings my father would drive his bread truck by the house. I used to ride on the floor of that bread truck as he delivered (分送) the bread to the stores. The  and the warmth from the bread made me hungry and kept me warm. I’ll always remember that.
My father would attend all my games. One night before an important game my father told me    that he wouldn’t be able to watch the game because he had to deliver the bread and it was a three-hour    from his route. The next day as the game time drew near, I thought about my dad. I happened to look across the field and  saw his bread truck pulling into the stadium (體育場). He tried to make the game. I’ll always remember that.
Years later I became a teacher. I’ll never forget the voice on the phone early one morning telling me dad had just been killed in a traffic accident. I could hear my heart beat in my ears. I    up the phone and went back to my bedroom. After that nothing was very important to me. One day I was on the playground when a little boy walked up to me and grabbed my hand. His hand held mine the    way I used to hold my father’s by the last two fingers. At that moment I found my    in life again. You see even though my father was gone, he left something with me. He left me his smile, spirit and touch. My purpose was to use those gifts as he did. From that day I started. I’ll always remember that!

In the middle of the first term of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods.
One day, Miss White’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve! Pay attention!” Steve turned to look at her, fixing his eyes on Miss White, as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but...” She hesitated, her eyes searching his face. “...The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!” She just stared at Steve. Steve dropped his eyes.
After that, it was war! Steve still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“You’re smart enough! You’ll see a change!” Nothing touched him.
“Give yourself a chance! Don’t give up on your life!” Nothing.
“Steve! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Steve went home from school, thoughtful, that afternoon. Walking into the house, both parents were out. He, quickly, gathered up a jar of peanut butter, a loaf of bread, a bottle of water, and this time...his schoolbooks.
The following Monday he arrived at school on time, and he waited for Miss White to enter the classroom. She walked in, all smiles! God, she was beautiful!
Miss White, immediately, gave a quiz on the weekend homework. Steve hurried through the test and was the first to hand in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss White took his paper. Obviously puzzled, she began to look it over. Miss White’s face was in total shock! The smartest boy in the seventh grade had just passed his first test!
From that moment nothing was the same for Steve. Life at home remained the same, but life still changed. He discovered that not only could he learn, but he was good at it!

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be very difficult to let your anger go off. But forgiveness(原諒)is possible – and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive can have more energy, better appetite and better sleep. “People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. “So it can help save on the damage to our system and allow people to feel more energetic.”
So when someone has hurt you, cool down first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology(道歉). “Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing,” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to say sorry, you could be waiting a very long time.”
Next keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who worries you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
Finally, try to see things from the other person’s perspective(看法). You may realize that he or she was acting out of knowledge, fear – even love. To get perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person’s point of view.
小題1:What’s the name of Dr. Frederic Luskin’s book?
小題2:According to the writer, what should you do first after being hurt?
小題3:Why does Dr. Luskin advise us not to wait for an apology after being hurt?
小題4:What’s the writer’s idea to get perspective?
小題5:What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the passage?
