Did you know that 11,000 people die every day from smoking? Did you know that people die every day from breathing smoke        other people’s cigarettes?
Tobacco smoke has 43 ingredients that may        cancer. If smokers had learned these
when they were young, they probably would never have started smoking.
Most smokers try        first cigarette when they are teenagers. Often, they start smoking because they think that it makes them look more        . Sometimes they start smoking because their friends tell them that it’s cool. If teenagers are told that half of them will die before the age of 65 from smoking cigarettes, how can they still think it’s cool to smoke?
One of the biggest problems is cigarette advertisements. Tobacco companies        tell the truth to teenagers about cigarettes. After watching the advertisements on TV or looking at the posters in which people ride horses or play in a rock band, young people often think that smoking      be cool.
Sadly, cigarettes are very difficult to        once a person has started smoking. Most teenagers start smoking         they are influenced by friends or cigarettes advertisements. And often, the teenagers regret the decision to start smoking later in life.
Teenagers need to know        bad cigarettes are for their health. If they are told that cigarettes kill more people than guns do, they probably will never start smoking.

During my second year of nursing school, our teacher gave us an exam. I was a hardworking student and I did well in all the subjects. I finished the questions successfully until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?”
Of course this was a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She is short and about 60 years old. She has dark hair. But how would I know her name? I had never talked with her before. In fact, I’d never even thought about talking to her. I stared at my paper and started to feel rather guilty. Finally, I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.
Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade.
“Certainly,” the teacher said. “In your life, you will meet many people. All are important. They deserve(值得) your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.”
I’ve never forgotten that lesson. Everyone deserves my attention and I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, perhaps, the most important lesson of my life. I also learned the cleaning woman’s name was Dorothy.

Sometimes people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy, and what kind of food may do harm to our health. The USDA has prepared a food guide to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat (like fish and chicken), dairy (like milk and cheese),grains (like bread and rice), fruit and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets. The USDA also suggests how much of each food group is healthy to eat daily. Though this guide was prepared by the US government, it is very useful for people all over the world.
As a result of years of study, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example, Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount of grains, fruit and vegetables. Because of the way they eat, they have a high rate of cancer and heart disease. In Japan, people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have a very low rate of cancer and heart disease. The Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart disease and cancer goes up as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers, ice creams and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is going up there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is going up along with the change of the way people eat. Doctors everywhere suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food.
Eating healthily is important for children as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat in the same way as their parents. When parents eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits. Doctors suggest parents give their children healthier food such as fruit, vegetables and juice.
Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. We know that the food we eat affects us in different ways. For example, doctors believe that fruit and vegetables can really protect people from many different diseases. On the other hand, animal fat can cause diseases. We can change our eating habits now and enjoy many years of healthy living.

“Hello” is one of the first words we learn as babies, yet it’s one of the last ones we think to use as adults. That’s unlucky, because saying hello is more than just saying hello. How might the world change—how might we change—if we mastered this word? ①I spent one month saying hello to every person I met. Here’s what I’ve learned.
* It can make the students more active. In a study on this subject, Allan Smith, an assistant professor, had middle school teachers greet their students individually (個別的) each morning. And the whole day, the students behaved actively because of this exchange of greetings. School went from impersonal to personal and that caused more class participation (合作) and better grades.
* Environments influence friendliness. One study found that people in the city were less likely to shake hands with a stranger than those in the countryside. ②And researchers think pleasant environments can encourage more smiles and hellos. For example, people in vacation spots were much more friendly than those hurrying to work downtown.
* It improves people’s health. It’s impossible to say hello without smiling. And smiling has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce stress and bring happiness. Obviously, a smile creates a similar effect in the recipient (接受者).
So maybe we can make the world a better place by saying hello. After a month of doing it, I feel lighter and more connected and I have a better sense of happiness.
