Passage 5
Here in Siberia (西伯利亞), the winter is always very long and it’s very, very cold! It starts to snow in November and the snow won’t leave until May. The temperature is usually about -25℃, but it’s sometimes much colder. When it’s -35℃, children can’t go to school, but grown-ups still go to work! We wear a lot of warm clothes: socks and boots, sweaters and fur coats. All the houses have heating, so it’s never cold inside. In winter, we close the windows to stop the wind from getting in, and we don’t open them again until spring.
In spring and summer it rains a lot, and we don’t often see the sun. In summer it’s often about 25℃, but the weather is very changeable. One day it’s 25℃, and the next day it’s 10℃. People say that the weather was even colder in the past.

The population of the Earth is growing faster. It is important that we look after the Earth. We need it!
The Earth gives us a lot of things. We also give the Earth a lot, but some of the things are not good.
In nature, when something dies, other animals and plants get food from it. Every animal or plant gives food for other animals or plants. However, animals can’t get food from many of the things that we ‘give’ the Earth. Animals and plants can’t eat metal, plastic and glass. These things will stay in the ground for many, many years.

Some rubbish is very dangerous for plants and animals. In some places, many animals live together. One animal makes food for many more animals. If we put rubbish and chemicals in the water, the plankton(浮游生物) can die. If there isn’t any plankton, many animals have nothing to eat.
So what can we do? Don’t leave any rubbish in the countryside! Don’t make so much rubbish!
【小題1】 The Earth gives us ___________.

A.foodB.rubbishC.chemicalsD.pollution
【小題2】When something dies in nature, _________.

The scientists from the Lockheed Space Company (公司) work in Felton, California, with the help of a computer. But the computer is placed in Sunnyside, about 80 kilometers away. What the scientists input is sent by telephone lines to the computer, and after a time, copies of the designs are needed back in Felton as possible. Lockheed people have tried several ways of sending the prints (印刷品), but the most effective seems to be by pigeon (鴿子). Are pigeons really used to carry messages in these days? They are, and they send the prints faster and cheaper than any other way.
Human (人類的) messengers (persons carrying messages) are much more expensive and slower than the pigeons. The road to Felton goes through the mountains, and the driving is not easy. An electronic printout system(電子印刷系統(tǒng)) could do the work in Felton, but at a cost of 10 dollars a print. Pigeons carry the designs for about 1 dollar each.

Everybody dreams. But only some people remember their dreams. Our dreams often include all the senses—smells, sounds, sights, tastes and things we touch.
Early in the twentieth century, two famous scientists developed their personal ideas about dreams. Austrian psychiatrist(奧地利心理學(xué)家) Sigmund Freud believed people often dream about things they want but can’t have. Swiss(瑞士) psychiatrist Carl Jung worked closely with Freud for several years, but he believed dreams provide solutions to problems we face when we are awake.
Other researchers are studying how dreaming helps our bodies work with problems and very sad emotions(感情). Robert Stickgold is a professor of psychiatry (心理學(xué)教授). He says that when we dream, the brain is trying to make sense of the world. He does not agree with Sigmund Freud that dreaming is the way we express our hidden feelings and desires(愿望).
Scientists believe it is important to keep researching dreams. Yet there is still no agreement on exactly how the brain works when we are dreaming or why we dream.

Think stars don’t move? Think again! When you look at the sky at night, the stars may appear to stay in the same place. But stars are always on the move—they are just so far away that the movement is hard to see.
But some stars move in ways that appear to be strange to be real. In 2005, astronomer Warren Brown found one of these space oddities(奇特). It was located on the outer edge of the Milky Way, the galaxy(星系) we live in. The star was speeding away like nothing he’d ever seen. “It seemed unbelievable. No star in the galaxy has a speed like that,” Brown remembers. “I thought, oh my goodness, I have something kind of special here.”
No one had ever seen a star like this one. What does a scientist do when the results don’t make sense?
Brown didn’t give up. Instead, he kept looking. And he kept finding more of these strange and speedy stars, called hypervelocity stars. Hyper means “above” and velocity has to do with speed. He and his team just found six more of these “above speed” stars, bringing to the total of 16. And, he says, he’s found even more, and is just waiting for the scientific community to confirm them.
