On August 18,2012, the White House workers prepared for a special group of guests(賓客). The First Lady was hosting an important lunch.

At 10:00, her guests arrived. Fifty-four children, each with a parent or grandparent, walked into the White House. The lucky guests were the winners of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. It was a competition created by the First Lady a few months ago. She asked kids ages 8 to 12 to think up healthy, delicious lunch recipes(食譜).Winners from across the country, one from every state, were brought to Washington, DC, for the “state dinner”.
At the start of the meal, the First Lady welcomed her guests and congratulated them on winning the competition. “You were the winner in your state――the whole state,” she said. “You guys won! Cool!” She also explained what made the recipes win. “You thought of dishes that are good for you, but more importantly, they taste good, too,” she said.
Just before the dessert time, Michelle stood up to make an announcement(宣告). “We have a special guest who wanted to stop by and say hello,” she explained. “So it’s pleasant to introduce the President of the United States.”
The president walked to each table, shaking hands with the winners and their family members. For the kids, this was the icing on the cake. “It was amazing to watch the President,” Kayla, one winner said. “His visit was a surprise and that’s a really big meal.”

When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s mistake.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my mistake; the bus was late.” It is probably not your mistake, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop paying attention to whom to blame and start paying attention to how to improve the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming(克服) problems. For example, if you were late because the bus was late, maybe you need to leave home early. Or, you might call a taxi or call friends for help when in need. For another example, if your workmate causes you problems on the job for short of responsibility(責任心) or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or leave this person with some simple jobs. You should accept that the person is not reliable(可靠的) and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your workmate fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges(挑戰(zhàn)) and chances to develop their own talents. So, stop paying attention to “whose mistake it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.

Mrs. Smith often felt lonely when her husband went to work. The room was small and she always spent only half an hour tidying it. She couldn’t get up early in the morning, so Mr. Smith had to cook breakfast himself. She usually had some bread and milk for lunch and only cooked supper for herself and her husband. They had no TV.  Mr.  Smith always went to bed at nine.
It was a winter morning. The sun was shining and it was warmer outside than it was in the room. The woman sat on the step of a shop, looking at the busy traffic. At that moment, a man with a map in his hand was coming towards her.
“Excuse me, madam.” said the man.”Could you tell me how to get to the nearest hospital, please?”
Mrs. Smith looked at him up and down. “He seems a farmer.” the woman said to herself. “Let me laugh at him.”
Then she turned to him and said, “Lie down in the middle of the street, and you’ll soon be sent to a hospital.”
“Please set an example to me, then.” said the man.
She had to tell him the way and then she said, “I think you must be in a city for the first time. It’s much more beautiful than the field. Is that right?”

In the middle of the first term of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods.
One day, Miss White’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams. “Steve! Pay attention!” Steve turned to look at her, fixing his eyes on Miss White, as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but...” She hesitated, her eyes searching his face. “...The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!” She just stared at Steve. Steve dropped his eyes.
