Ⅲ.任務(wù)型閱讀

English is an important international language, but that doesn’t mean it's easy to learn.① Many experts have tried to make English easier to learn, but they weren’t always successful.

In 1930,Professor   C. K. Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words and Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn’t understand the answers in “real” English! It was also impossible to explain a word if it wasn’t in the Basic English word list.

R.E. Zachrisson,a university professor in Sweden, decided that②對(duì)英語學(xué)習(xí)者來說最大的問題是拼寫,so he invented a language with the name Anglic. Anglic was similar ③                     English, but with much simpler spelling,

“father” became “faadher” and “new” became “nue”. Unluckily,Anglic never became popular.

In the age of international communication through the Internets new form of English might appear. A large number of the world's emails are in English and include examples of “Netlingo” like OIC (Oh,I see) and TTYL (Talk to you later) . In another fifty years,English might not be used. We might all speak fluent Internetish!

Ⅱ.閱讀理解

In the United States, sixteen is a special age when teenagers can begin driving. There's often a special celebration for a girl's 16th birthday —a big party called Sweet-16.

About a month before the party, the girl's family sends out invitations to the guests (客人) .The guests must buy special presents for the birthday girl and find good clothes to wear. A Sweet-16 present usually costs $ 40 to $ 60. This is about $ 20 more than the usual cost of a birthday present.

The party itself is not held at someone's house. The family rents a big hall for the event. Food, cakes and a DJ are provided. Around 6 o’clock in the evening, guests arrive and greet the birthday girl. Then the girl and her father have a special father-daughter dance. After that, guests dance for about 30 to 45 minutes.

Then there is the most important part of the Sweet-16 party, the Candle-Lighting ceremony (儀式) .The Sweet-16 girl stands behind 16 unlit candles and gives each candle to her friends, family, and anyone that she feels is important to her. A lot of crying and hugging goes on at this time. After that, people sit and eat. Most guests begin leaving around 11 o’clock.
