About five years ago my family moved to New York and I started going to a new school. I was a little  1   , but I worried I would never be better than the other ninth graders.

Lucy, a girl in my class was not ready for the change. I thought she didn't   2 me from the start. In fact, I was sure that she hated me. When I asked her a  3 , she answered me impatiently as if I was a fool.

My teacher made us sit next to each other for a term. Lucy didn't like that   4 .

I didn't wear make-up (化妝), and I didn't wear those strange jeans other people were wearing. I didn't exactly look like the coolest girl. However, I kept smiling to her,  5  she rolled her eyes at (翻白眼) me. I kept telling her she looked   6  , even if she was angry.

Finally, Lucy let me talk to her, even in front of her “cool” friends. She started   7  me how beautiful I looked. I still remember that first time when she   8  to me saying that, and I smiled right back, telling her a joke. Lucy   9   me to her house for parties, and talked to me all the time. Lucy, the girl who had  10  me, called me her best friend.

I will never forget a sentence written by Abraham Lincoln: “Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends with them?”

In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited . About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way . Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed (窘迫的 . No one had told them about the British custom (習(xí)慣)of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus .
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding (點(diǎn)頭) your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty .
In that country, you shake your head to mean 'yes'— a nod means 'no' . At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeated refilled as soon as you drink up . If you think that you have had enough , you should take the cup or glasses in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.
In Europe it quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble . Also, you should try to avoid (避免)touching the head of an adult (成人) ——it's just not done in Thailand .

Prana, our beautiful dog whose name means ‘breath of life’, isn’t with us any more. But she brought such joy and love that we still miss her.
There are so many wonderful stories about the love in this dog, but my favorite is this one.
It was an autumn day in Minnesota, but the weather didn’t know the difference between autumn and winter. Unexpectedly, we were hit with a big snow fall for which no one was prepared.
We have two apple trees in our backyard. Prana loved apples. When she went outside, she’d take hold of an apple, put it far back in her mouth, and sneak into the house to save for eating later. The apples had been on the ground and were often dirty so I wasn’t always happy that Prana had brought them into the house. Feeling my displeasure, she would turn her head so I wouldn’t see her hidden treasure.
On the day that it snowed too early in the season, Prana went outside and I watched her from the window. I noticed that she was madly digging holes and brought the apples to the surface so they could be seen above the snow. I wondered why she was doing this. She seemed to be completely busy with some kind of important task to dig up as many apples as possible during her yard time.
When I called her back into the house, she had her usual one apple in her mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The yard was completely covered with birds. Prana had dug up all those apples for her bird friends to eat. She knew that they wouldn’t have stored enough food to live through such an early winter.

【小題2】What does the underlined phrase sneak into mean in the fourth paragraph?

【小題4】From the story we can learn that______.
