I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago. Her husband died because of traffic accident. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insights with us.
The class was clearly over. She said,"Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you an important thought.”  “Each of us is on Earth to learn, share, love and *appreciate. We must *cherish every single day.”
Her eyes beginning to water, she went on, “So I would like you to make me a *promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful. It could be a *scent----perhaps of freshly baked bread, or it could be the sound of the *breeze slightly *rustling the leaves in the trees.
“Please look for these things, and cherish them. For, although it may sound * trite, these things are the *stuff of life. They are the little things on Earth to enjoy. They are the things we often take for *granted. We must try to notice them because it can be easily taken away at any time.”
The class was completely quiet. We picked up our books and went out of the room silently. That afternoon I noticed more things on my way from school than I had that whole semester.
I often think of that teacher and try to appreciate all off those things that sometimes we *overlook.
Take notice of something special you see on your lunch time today. Walk *barefoot along the beach at *sunset. For as we get older, it is not the things we did that we regret, but the things we didn’t do.

There are two main kinds of sports. These two kinds of sports are team sports and individual (個人的) sports. Team sports are such sports as baseball, basketball, and volleyball. Team sports need two separate (獨立的) teams. The teams play against each other. They compete against each other to get the best score. For example, in a football game, if team A gets 8 points and team B gets 4 points, team A wins the game. Team sports are sometimes called competitive (競爭性的) sports.
Another kind of sports is individual sports. In individual sports there are no teams. There isn’t any competition. People play individual sports in order to get some exercise, not to win a game. Individual sports are such sports as swimming, skiing, and running.
Of course, it is possible (可能的) to compete in individual sports. It is possible to keep a score in individual sports. The main difference, however, between team sports and individual sports is that individual sports can be finished alone. But team sports always need more than one person.

A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the correct time and is never late for anything.
An unpunctual man never does what he has to do at the right time. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be got back. Time is more useful than material(物質(zhì)) things. In fact, time is life itself. An unpunctual man is always wasting his most important things as well as others’. An unpunctual person is always saying unhapppily that he finds no time to answer letters or return calls. But the man who really has much to do is very careful of his time. He knows that he can not finish all his work unless he carefully does every piece of work.
Being unpunctual is the sign of disrespect(不尊重) towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the time when he should be there, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. Usually this will be thought as a great disrespect to the host and all the other guests.
Not like a punctual person, an unpunctual one can’t do his duty wonderfully, whether it is public or personal. Imagine how it would be if those who should do important tasks failed to be on time. A man who is known to be often unpunctual is never believed by his friends or fellow men.

【小題2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.An unpunctual person often has more time.
B.An unpunctual person has more work to do.

When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying “ I love you”. I was shocked to learn that not one of my students has said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them. “Does your mother love you?” “ Of course,” they answered.
“ How do you know?” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was stunned. So mom’s cooking and criticizing read out as “I love you”. “Then do you say‘I love you’to her?” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by good jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these questions in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different responses. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.
One of my favourite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “ Now that you have gone, I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”
In my family we all say “I love you” a lot. While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.
【小題1】 Chinese people prefer to show love by __________.

A.saying “I love you”B.cooking
C.getting good gradesD.doing something helpful
【小題2】 The underlined word “stunned” mean________ in Chinese.
A.好笑B.難受C.震驚D.有趣
【小題3】 In paragraph 4, what’s the real meaning of the mom’s hugging?
A.She is meeting her daughter at the door.
B.She loves her daughter and misses her.
C.She is glad that she has more time to herself.
D.She finds it interesting to hug her daughter.
【小題4】 Which of the following statements is RIGHT?
A.Chinese people never show love to their mothers.
B.Chinese students express love to their mothers by studying hard and trying to get good jobs.
C.In foreign countries people have great depth of feelings to say “I love you”.
D.People from different countries will never understand each other.
【小題5】 What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Say “I love you” more to your family.
B.Say “I love you” a lot to Chinese people.
C.Say “I love you” as a greeting to others.
D.Say “I love you” without great depth of feelings.

In April, 2013, I visited Yangzhou.
Ge Garden is very beautiful and peaceful. The ticket has a map on the back of it that I didn’t noticed until I had already left. But to be honest, I don’t think that map is very useful because it isn’t very clear an tailed. In my opinion, it’s better to improve it. Compared with He Garden, the map on the back of the ticket for He Garden is much clearer, more detailed and more useful. However, in the room that has the picture of the family members, there is only Chinese, no English, so my advice is to add English in interesting places. I got lost in the Slender West Lake. I spent about 30 minutes just trying to get out of one area. I think they need more signs posted along the trails. I like the Slender West Lake best, as she is so pretty! The ladies that were sweeping were very sweet. They always smiled at me and said hello, so it was nice.
Taking a taxi is the most efficient(有效率的) and quickest way to get around Yangzhou. I didn’t have a problem getting to the places which I’d like to go to while using a taxi. The driver was very friendly. The fare isn’t too high, either. But I didn’t enjoy taking the bus. The bus ride to the Mastixia Bay (茱萸灣公園) took long although I only had to pay one yuan. It was also hard finding where Bus 32 was. I tried asking some people in English but they couldn’t understand me, so I had to ask in simple Chinese that I only know buy that still didn’t work. I spent about one hour walking around the city to look for Bus 32. The tricycle(三輪車) was nice, but it was a little too expensive for a small distance. Maybe I was ripped off by the guy who rode for me, but it was an enjoyable ride. I felt like I was part of the garden city more.
Over all I am satisfied with Yangzhou and will recommend it to others.
【小題1】How many places of interest are mentioned in the passage?

A.Three B.Four C.Five D.Six
【小題2】The underlined phrase “ripped off” in Paragraph 3 may mean “________”.

【小題3】Which of the following I NOT the writher’s advice?
A.English should be added in interesting places.
B.Everyone in Yangzhou should speak English.
C.The Slender West Lake needs more signs along the trails.
D.The maps on the tickets for Ge Garden need improving.

A.a(chǎn) foreign visitor B.a(chǎn) lady sweeping in the park
C.a(chǎn) taxi driver D.a(chǎn) guy riding a tricycle
