Ban Ki-moon became the eighth UN Secretary-General in 2006. Before then,he was a diplomat (外交官) in South Korea,where he served as the foreign minister (外交部長(zhǎng)). His diplomatic service started after graduating from college. His first post was at his nation's embassy (大使館) in India He quickly got a reputation for his diplomatic skills.

   Ban was born to become a diplomat. He was a star pupil at school and was chosen to send a message to the United Nations. In 1962,he won an essay competition. The prize was a trip to America,where he met President John F. Kennedy. He told him his dream was to be a diplomat.

   In 1970,Ban Ki-moon received a bachelor's degree (學(xué)士學(xué)位) in international relations from Seoul National University. In 1985,he earned a master's degree (碩士) in public administration from the Kennedy Schopf Government at Harvard University. In 2010,he received ar honorary doctoral degree (榮譽(yù)博士學(xué)位) from Nanjir University. He speaks Korean,English,French,German anc Japanese. The Korean press calls him the M slippery eelM because of his ability to escape tricky questions.
