A person has been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give him a transfusion (輸血) because he has lost much blood in the accident. However, special care must be taken in selecting new blood for him. If the blood is too different from his own, the transfusion can kill him.
There are four basic blood groups: A, B, AB and O. A single test can tell us a person’s blood group. Everybody is born with one of these four blood groups. People’s blood group, like hair colour, is inherited (繼承) from parents.
Because the substances contained in each group are different, transfusion must be given carefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can be given to any other group, so it is often called the universal donor. On the contrary, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient (接受者). However, before being given the transfusion, patients usually receive only salt or plasma (血漿) until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible. In this way, it is possible to avoid any bad results of the transfusion.
There is a relationship between our blood groups and our nationalities. Among the Europeans, about 42 percent are blood group A while 45 percent are blood group O. The rarest is blood group AB. However, some American Indian groups are nearly 100 percent blood group O.
小題1:Which of the following shows the correct relationship in blood transfusion? (→ =" giving" blood to)

小題2:Usually, before being given a transfusion, ________.

B.a(chǎn) person needs to have a good rest
C.a(chǎn) person needs to have a lot of food and water
D.a(chǎn) person needs to find the person with the same blood group as him
小題3:The third most common blood type among the Europeans is _______.
A.AB.BC.ABD.O
小題4:Which is NOT right according to the passage?
A. A person’s blood group depends on his parents.
B. There is only one kind of blood group in a person’s body.
C. About 13 percent of the Europeans have blood group AB.
D. Most of American Indians can be universal blood donors.
小題5:Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Blood transfusionB.Blood groups
C.Car accidentsD.Blood group and nationalities

At last, the mid-term exams are over. You’ve done the hard work, but you can’t relax. You have to prepare for the next exams. Do you hate exams? If you do, you are not alone. Students in other countries hate them as well.
Luckily for them, British students have fewer exams than Chinese students. And they only have them once a year. Every summer they take a test in each subject. Each test lasts about an hour. These exams don’t count for much, even if a student does really badly they still progress to the next grade. When the results come out, they are then placed in an end-of-year report. The report is sent to the child’s parents. It describes how the student studied at school.
This report is private, so only the teacher, the student and his or her parents see it. This means that the students don’t know how other students scored(得分) in the test. Some students choose to tell each other, but others keep it secret.
Parents’ meetings are held twice a year, at the end of winter term and then at the end of the summer term. Children go along with their parents to meet their teachers privately and discuss their performance at school.
小題1:For British students, the school life is         than that of Chinese students.
A.more relaxingB.much tenserC.more boringD.much harder
小題2:The underlined phrase “don’t count for much” means
A.難以計(jì)數(shù)B.不太重要C.期望不多D.難度不大
小題3:Which of the following is NOT true for British students?
A.They have exams once a year.
B.They don’t know their classmates’ scores.
C.Parents’ meetings are held at the end of the terms.

The London Olympic Games are coming soon. This summer, Chinese sports fans will be able to watch the exciting games in 3-D on CCTV.
When you watch 3-D movies or TV, you have to wear a special pair of glasses. The 3-D glasses make the people and the things on the screen look like they are in the room with you.
3-D, means having three *dimensions: *width, height and *depth. 3-D technology is based on the way the human brain and eye work. Because the *pupils of a person’s eyes are about 6.5cm apart, when we look at something, each eye sees it from different *angle. Our eyes send the two pictures to our brain, and the brain puts them together. The small difference between the picture from the right eye and the picture from the left eye make us see depth.
While watching 2-D films, we don’t have to wear the special glasses. We see the pictures in two dimensions, each eye get the same information. This is because there is only one way of watching it.
So the aim of 3-D technology is to get a different picture into each eye of the person. It uses two film *projectors. One *projects a left eye picture and the other projects a right eye picture. When we are in the cinema, we can see different pictures in each eye at the same time with the help of the 3-D glasses.
While watching 3-D films, we feel that we are actually in the same environment as the things we are watching. However, some people are against watching 3-D films. One of the reasons is the 3-D glasses makes the screen of the film or TV look darker. It is bad for eyes. What’s more, people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3-D movies, because their brains need to work harder to “read” the pictures.
小題1:Paragraph 3 mainly tells us __________.
A.how we see things in 3-D B.how we watch the Olympic Games
C.how 3-D films are made D.where we watch 3-D films or TV
小題2:When we watch a 2-D film, each of our eyes get ________ information.
A.noB.differentC.darkD.the same
小題3:Which is the following is right according to the passage?
A.We don’t have to wear 3-D glasses if we watch games in 3-D on TV.
B.The 3-D technology is based on the way the human ear and eye work.
C.All the people can have fun watching 3-D movies or TV for a long time.
D.3-D glasses make us see different pictures in each eye at the same time.
小題4:Why are some people against watching 3-D films? Because ____________.
A.they make them more excited or sadder
B.3-D glasses make the screen look darker
C.3-D films make all people get headaches
D.they dislike watching the Olympic Games

If you have a bottle of water recycled(再利用) from urine(尿), would you drink it? Astronauts at the ISS may soon do so.
NASA(美國航空航天局) said it would use a high-tech machine to recycle wastewater at the ISS. The machine will recycle water for washing hands, shower water, water for brushing teeth and even urine to make drinking water. It will save millions of dollars each year.
At present, each ISS astronaut uses about 4.4 liters(升) of water every day. It costs about 24 million dollars a year to send water up to the ISS. A liter of water costs about $ 11,000.
The machine will be sent to the ISS later. NASA hopes it will recycle about 93% of all the water used on the station.

Tony Buzan’s grades were going down at university. Disappointed with his low marks, he went to the library to find a book on how to use his brain. He was directed to the medical section. Confused, he said to the librarian, “I don’t want to take my brain out, I just want to learn how to use it.” Her reply was simple: “There’s no book on that.”
“I thought to myself,” says Buzan, “if I buy a little radio, I get an instruction manual (說明書). If I buy a microwave, I get an instruction manual. But for the most important machine in the world, no instruction manual?”
Fifty years later, Buzan has become the world’s leading speaker on the brain and learning. In the late 1960s, he invented the mind map, a visual representation of thought processes.
This kind of thinking has become a popular tool for planning, organizing, problem solving, and communicating across the world. He has since authored and co-authored over 100 books that have appeared in more than 30 languages.
“I think in most cases, people use less than 1 percent of their brains,” he says.
But how do you expand this 1 percent? How do you become the best student you can be?
According to Buzan, the answer is simple. You take a section of whatever it is that you are trying to learn, he says, and you read it for its essence (精髓、要素). Then you make a mind map of all the important details. For a truly effective mind map, you start with a colored image in the center of your page. Draw the first image that comes to mind on the topic you are mind mapping. Branch off from your central image and create one of your main ideas. From your main branches draw some sub-branches and from those sub-branches you can draw even more branches. He emphasizes that you should use plenty of images and colors as these help with memory recall and encourage creativity.
By using this visual format (形式), according to Buzan, your mind will begin to make associations that will help you remember more information for longer periods of time.
Buzan believes that traditional note-taking methods, such as lists and summaries, do not stimulate the brain’s recall capacity or ability in the same way. Because of this, students will often find themselves locked away in their rooms for hours, trying hard to memorize separate details. Buzan believes that for a more effective and lasting way of studying, you must first understand how your brain works.
“Everyone is born smart,” he says. “You just have to learn how to learn.”
小題1:What is the main purpose of the first two paragraphs?
A.To show that Tony Buzan was worried about his study.
B.To invite us to think about the importance of manuals.
C.To prove that the mind map is a useful tool for the brain.
D.To show why Tony Buzan studies the brain and learning.
小題2:What does the word “stimulate” mean in the passage?
A.Excite.B.Improve.C.Encourage.D.Affect.
小題3:What can we infer from the passage?
A.If we learn the mind map, we will become the best student.
B.The mind map will help your brain connect separate details.
C.The mind map will be more effective if we put more details in it.
D.We will solve the problem if we make connections between ideas.
小題4:What is the best title for the passage?
A.How to make the mind map?
B.Is the mind map widely used?
C.Can your memory be mapped?
D.Is the mind map helpful in thinking?
