There are about fifteen hundred languages in the world. But only a few of them are very important. English is one of them. Many, many people use it, not only in England and the USA, but also in other parts of the world. About 200,000,000 people speak it as their own language. It is difficult to say how many people are learning it as a foreign language. Many millions of people are trying to do so. Is it easy or difficult to learn English? Different people may have different answers. Have you ever noticed ads(廣告) of this kind in the newspapers or magazines? “Learn English in six weeks, or give your money back…” “Easy and funny…” “Our records and tapes help you master English in a month”. Of course, it never happened quite like that.
The only language that seems easy to learn is the mother tongue. We should remember that we all learned our own language well when we were children. If we could learn English in the same way, it would not seem so difficult. Think of what a small child does. He listens to what people say. He tries what he hears.
So it is hard to say that learning English is easy. We must do a lot of practice. And practice needs great efforts and takes much time. Good teachers, record, tapes, books, and dictionaries will be helpful, but they cannot do the student’s work for him.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the local people of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the local people become unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy(經(jīng)濟(jì)). It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance(推進(jìn)) the well-being (health and happiness) of local people.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a lot of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads and other support facilities needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.

In the opinion of many people, the twoparent family is the correct way to raise children. Traditionally, this has been as the most natural way, but singleparent families have had to face prejudices(偏見) against their lifestyle. However, the singleparent family is the fastest growing type of family. In the United States, a national survey showed that at least 50% of children will be members of a singleparent family. So we think it is important to throw prejudices away and to see the advantages of singleparent families.
When compared to twoparent families, singleparent families are usually at a disadvantage in some ways. They are often in short of money, and children receive less attention. What’s more, single parents can find themselves under too much pressure(壓力) of both work and home. Despite(盡管) these disadvantages, it is possible for singleparent families to look for support from friends, schools, communities or other organizations. They need to remember that nobody can do it alone.
Surprisingly, singleparent families also have some advantages over twoparent families. Single parents have greater flexibility(靈活性) in spending time with children, because they don’t have to consider the needs of a husband or wife. So they can develop closer relationships with their children. Another advantage comes from the fact that single parents often work together with their children to solve problems, which makes children feel more needed and valued.
It’s important to remember that singleparent families have, until now suffered prejudices from some people. They think that it’s easier for the children in singleparent families to drop out of school in teens, and to be jobless in their early twenties. But, with the support from friends, schools and communities, singleparent families become more accepted by society, and this situation is certain to improve. In the future we will probably see these prejudices disappear.
小題1:What does the writer mainly tell us in Paragraph 1?
A. People shouldn’t have prejudices against singleparent families.

D. 50% of children will be members of a singleparent family in the USA.
小題2:Which disadvantage of singleparent families is NOT mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.They are often in short of money.
B.Children may receive less attention.
C.Children also suffer from the prejudice.
D.Parents are under pressure of both work and home.
小題3:How can single parents make their children feel more needed and valued?
A.Don’t consider the needs of others.
B.Pay more attention to their children.
C.Develop closer relationships with their children.
D.Discuss and solve problems together with their children.
小題4:Which of the following may be the best title for this passage?
A.Advantages and Disadvantages
B.Changing Views on Singleparent Families
C.Best Lifestyle for Children
D.Comparing Two Types of Family

Ever thought of moving to a new country? How about starting a new country? Patri Friedman is planning to do just that. He left Google years ago to set up the Seasteading Institute. And his dream is to build seasteads-----floating micro-nations in the middle of the ocean.
So, what will life on a seastead be like? Probably a bit like life on a cruise liner (游輪), but much larger, with shops, gyms, swimming pools, schools and other areas. In fact, the early seasteads may actually be specially-rebuilt cruise liners. But as science advances, Friedman believes they’ll become more like floating cities, with several hundred people.
Seasteading raises a lot of questions. First of all, how will the new countries make money? The Seasteading Institute has suggested several money-making ideas, including ocean-based theme parks, casinos (賭場) and fish farming. There’s also the questions of safety. With storms, typhoons and pirates (海盜) , the high seas are a dangerous place. However, the Institute says that it can stand bad weather and prevent crimes with its well-designed systems.
So, is this just a day dream? Well, maybe not. One of the people behind the project is Peter Thiel. He founded PayPal and was one of the first investors (投資者) in Facebook. So far, he’s donated $ 500,000 to the project.
And Friedman isn’t wasting any time. He recently announced the creation of the Poseidon Award. This will be given to the first seastead with fifty people. Friedman is hoping to hand out the award in 2015.

A.Friedman is planning to move to a new country.
B.Friedman is worried about the safety of seasteads.
C.Friedman has got some supporters for his project.

小題4:Which of the following can be the best titles of this passage?

Dogs are friends of man. They work for us. They hunt with us. They also play with us. But a long time ago, all over the world, dogs were wild. Dogs can go back to the Stone Age. All dogs had the same ancestor (祖先). It is believed that this ancestor was much like a wolf. Other animals, like fox, also came from this ancestor. 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子正誤。正確的用“A”表示,不正確的用“B”表示。
Is an earthquake dangerous? Yes, of course. But this doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. If you know what to do in an earthquake, you can be safe.
Keep a cool head. Worry may cause bad decisions. Don’t follow others blindly. Think about what you should do. The first several minutes are important.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a desk or table. Take care of your head. Stay away from windows and things that may fall and hurt you.
If you are in a crowded room and far away from the door, don’t rush to it. You will find too many people trying to escape at the same time. Instead, stay under a desk or table. Don’t use an elevator. You may not get out of it.
Stay in a safe place until you are sure it’s OK to leave. Some aftershocks (余震) may follow an earthquake. These are as dangerous as the earthquake.
If you are in debris (廢墟), try to free your hands and legs. You may make noises by hitting stones. Shouting will make you tired. Try to find some water and food. They are important for you if you aren’t found in a short time. Wait patiently for help.
