I found out that sometimes doing someone a favor could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me said something to me, but I didn’t understand. So I got closer to her and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers could not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test paper had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the classroom when all the other students were out. Then she began to talk to me about honesty and emphasized(重點(diǎn)強(qiáng)調(diào)) the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had talked to me about all those things.
The next day, I realized that the teacher thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. When I was a teenager growing up in Russia, I felt studying very boring, I wanted to leave school and have my own life. There were only two ways for me to do this—working in the toy factory in my town, or getting married. I chose the first one. I was nervous when I told my father that I wanted to leave school. I thought he would say, “No! You are going to college.” Instead,  he took me by surprise when he said, “OK. We’ll go to the toy factory.”
Two days later, he took me to the factory. I had a very romantic idea of working in a factory. I had imagined everyone to be friendly working together and having fun. I even imagined there would be music and singing. I guess I had watched too many movies as a teenager.
When we arrived at the factory gates, my father spoke to the guard and one minute later we went inside. My father said, “Take your time. Look around.” I walked around the factory, looking at the buildings, the workers, and listening to the noise. It was terrible. I ran back to my father and said, “I want to go home.”
He asked me, “What do you think of the factory?”
“It’s terrible,” I replied.
“And you have another choice, but I think getting married is even worse!” he said.
