Mr. Brown lived in a house less than two miles from his office, so he was able to drive home every day for lunch. Every time he drove home at noon, he found many cars were parked outside his house and there was no room for his own car. He had to drive somewhere else to park his car. Then he had to walk back home. This made him very angry.
He had put up a board, which said, “ No parking” in the garden facing the road, but nobody noticed it. People seemed to obey(遵守) only a police notice with letters on a blue board:
POLICE NOTICE
NO PARKING
Mrs. Brown suggested that he could steal a police notice. He was afraid to do so. She then suggested that he could make one just like a police notice. He said he was not the police and couldn’t use the word “police”. Several days later, Mr. Brown made a blue board with white letters:
POLITE NOTICE
NO PARKING
“ Oh!” Mrs. Brown said, “You told me you weren’t going to use the word  “police”, but why do you use it now?” “Really?” he asked, “Look again.” She started to laugh. “You are really clever.”

The first chocolate was eaten by people in South America hundreds of years ago. In those days, the people did not really eat chocolate. They used the cocoa bean(可可豆)to make a chocolate drink and they enjoyed it very much. Many years later, the cocoa bean was brought to other countries and people came to love the taste of chocolate.
In 1824, John Cadbury opened a small shop in Britain. One of the things he sold was chocolate drink. In 1831, he opened a factory to make chocolate drink. Adults usually do not remember most of the things that are taught by their teachers at school. But this story is one   16  that I will never forget.
It was a normal Monday morning, and my teacher was teaching us about  17  things in life and about devoting ourselves to what we really need. This is how the story went:
18   lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the underground. He would get onto the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and   19 . He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at  20 street corner and begged for almost 20 years.
His  21  was dirty, and a stench (惡臭) came out. The neighbors could not bear the  22 any more, so they called for the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and  23 the house. There were small bags of  24  all over the house that he had collected over the years.
The police counted the money, and they soon   25 that the old man was a millionaire. They waited outside his house expecting to  26  the good news with him. When the old man arrived home that evening, one of the officers told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a   27 man now, a millionaire.
But the old man said  28  ;he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up  29  ,went to the underground, sat at the same street corner and continued to beg.
Clearly, this old man had no great plans,  30   or anything significant (重大的) for his life. We learn nothing from this story but to stay focused on the things we enjoy doing.

Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Aristotle, a Greek thinker, said, "Happiness depends upon (取決于)ourselves." In other words, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions(建議) to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future. For example, getting into college or getting a good job -that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

Passage 3
A smile will tell people around you that you are a kind and friendly person. However, many people don’t smile because they think they have ugly teeth. For example, one of my classmates, Mike, doesn’t have very nice teeth, so that is why he seldom opens his mouth. He even says that he has lost confidence because of his teeth. So it is very important for us to look after our teeth. In fact, a lot of people have this problem. Some people inherit teeth problems from their parents, while others’ teeth are damaged because of bad habits, like heavy smoking, eating too much sugar or not brushing teeth often. If your teeth are in bad shape, you should see a dentist and ask for help. They can help improve your teeth and tell you how to take care of them.
Smiling can help you to feel more confidence and make people think of you as a more friendly person. If you want to keep healthy, you should not only smile but also laugh. An Indian doctor called Kataria said that young children should laugh about 30 times a day, while adults should laugh between 7 and 15 times a day. So please take this chance to smile and laugh now.
